Weimar Germany Timeline

  • German Revolution of 1918 and The Resignation of Kaiser Wilhelm II

German Revolution of 1918 and The Resignation of Kaiser Wilhelm II
This is a picture of the proclamation of the German republic. This picture was chosen because it represents the beginning of Weimar Germany and the end of at least part of the German Revolution of 1918. The picture and event also both symbolize the official end of Imperial Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm II as he was forced to abdicate on November 9, 1919, the same day this picture is taken.
  • Ebert-Groener Pact

    Ebert-Groener Pact
This picture of Wilhelm Groener was chosen both because he was the one that made the Ebert-Groener Pact with Friedrich Ebert and because he symbolizes the power and independence of the German military from civilian control.
  • Armistice Ending WW1

    Armistice Ending WW1
This photograph of the the diplomats who created the armistice after the armistice was signed was chosen because it represents the first step towards (a temporary) peace in Europe and because it showcases at least some of the people who participated in making the armistice.

  • (Red) Ruhr Uprising

    (Red) Ruhr Uprising
This picture was chosen as it depicts the Red Ruhr Army, who played a major role fighting in the conflict.
  • Rapallo Treaty

    Rapallo Treaty
This image is sufficiently representative of this event as it depicts Germany and Soviet Russia's representatives at the treaty meeting - demonstrating the size of the event in a much clearer way.
  • Hyperinflation Crisis

    Hyperinflation Crisis
This image holds significance because it illustrates the massive amounts of money that were printed that resulted in the crisis occurring.
  • Occupation of the Ruhr by France and Belgium

Occupation of the Ruhr by France and Belgium
This image was chosen due to the fact that it excellently illustrates the scale of the invasion, showing a large number of troops marching through the streets in a tightly packed group.
  • Grand Coalition of Weimar Germany

    Grand Coalition of Weimar Germany
This is an image of Gustav Stresemann, who acted as the Reich Chancellor throughout the lifespan of the Grand Coalition.
  • Beer Hall Putsch

    Beer Hall Putsch
This image was selected primarily for the fact that it demonstrates the extremely large scale of the putsch, showing crowds of people filling the streets to the point where it becomes difficult to distinguish them because of the sheer crowdedness.
  • Introduction of the Rentenmark

    Introduction of the Rentenmark
I chose this image as it is a direct visual depiction of the Rentenmark, illustrating the currency that was to be used during the Weimar Golden Age.
  • Weimar Golden Age

    Weimar Golden Age
This image is an excellent depiction of the Weimar Golden Age, as it is an image of a family enjoying a beach vacation in 1927 (for reference, the Golden Age ended in 1929), which demonstrates how Stresemann's decision-making allowed room for affordable luxuries and entertainment in Weimar life.
  • Dawes Plan

    Dawes Plan
This image was chosen as it excellently describes and illustrates the reparation payment cycle that the Dawes Plan proposed between Germany, the U.S., and the Allies.
  • Election of President von Hindenburg

    Election of President von Hindenburg
The reason I chose this image is because it is a photo of Von Hindenburg, the President ultimately responsible for Adolf Hitler coming to power and wreaking havoc across Europe.
  • Locarno Treaty

    Locarno Treaty
The reason I chose this image is due to the fact that it displays a portion of the participants involved in the creation of the Locarno Treaty. These individuals include Gustav Stresemann, Austen Chamberlain, and Aristide Briand.
  • Treaty of Berlin with Soviet Union

Treaty of Berlin with Soviet Union
This is an image of the agreements made for the Treaty of Rapallo. The reason why I bring the image up here is due to the fact that the Treaty of Berlin served another purpose: reassuring the fact that the Treaty of Rapallo is there to stay, improving relations between the two nations.
  • German entrance into League of Nations

German entrance into League of Nations
This is an image of a newspaper from less than 10 years down the line, demonstrating how little power the League of Nations truly held. Germany was allowed to simply leave the league and go against them with minimal issues, allowing them to progress into World War 2.
  • Beginning of Great Depression

    Beginning of Great Depression
This image demonstrates how many Germans were blaming the Jewish for their economic struggles during the Great Depression, with these signs translating to “Don’t buy from Jews. Buy from German stores!”
  • Young Plan

    Young Plan
This is an image of Owen D. Young, with the purpose of me providing the image being to display the primarily individual responsible for the creation of the plan.
  • Von Papen’s deal with Hitler

    Von Papen’s deal with Hitler
The purpose of this image is to display how Von Papen played with fire and ultimately got burnt. He believed that everything would be under control, with Hitler constantly being on a leash... but that was anything but the case.
  • Hitler becomes Chancellor

    Hitler becomes Chancellor
This is quite clearly a photo of Adolf Hitler, the one who Von Papen convinced President Hindenburg to make Chancellor under the premise of having Hitler under a leash. This went nothing like Papen planned, ultimately leading to the horrors of the Holocaust.
