William Golding was known to be a brat, and he enjoyed hurting people. He was terrified of the cemetery behind his home and of the cellar of his home. He often spent time reading. He attended the school where his father taught, Marlborough Grammar School. He grew up in Marlborough, Wiltshire, in a house that backed onto a church graveyard, which instilled a lifelong fear of the graves and a deep dread of the house's cellar. He also had one older brother named Joseph.

William Golding started school in 1921 at Marlborough Grammar School and went to Brasenose College in Oxford from 1930 to 1935. In 1935, he graduated with his MA from Oxford, and then in 1937, he received a Diploma in Education from Oxford. When he started school, he unichonly was studying Natural, then he switched his degree to Literature.

William died at the age of 81 in 1993 from a heart attack. He died in his home, Tullimaar, in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, England.
