Franz Ferdinand Assassinated
On June 28th 1914 Franz Ferdinand was shot and killed in Sarajevo Bosnia. Earlier the day Franz Ferdinand was killed Nedjelko Cabrinovic threw a bomb at Ferdinand's car but his driver quickly noticed and sped up and Franz Ferdinand was not injured but others were. Franz Ferdinand cancelled the meeting he had with officials in the area to meet the people who got injured in the hospital. Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Franz Ferdinand on his way to the hospital after his driver took a wrong turn -
Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia
A month after Franz Ferdinand was assassinated Austria Hungary with the help of Germany war is declared on Serbia. Austria Hungary wanted to end Serbian Nationalism. Austria Hungary also wanted revenge for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand since he was assassinated by Serbians and they wanted to show dominance. -
Germany declares war on France and Russia
When Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia Russia started to prepare for war since Serbia and Russia were allies. Germany demanded Russia not to enter the war between Austria Hungary but Russia refused to listen to Germany. Which led Germany to declare war on Russia. Two days after Germany declared war on France Germany declared war on France because Russia and France were allies and Germany had realized war with Russia meant war with France. -
U boats are used for the first time in WW1
The Germans used U- Boats for the first time during WW1 when attacking British land cruisers . During the attack German U boats sunk 3 British land cruisers. Within the hour of the attack nearly 1,500 people were killed by the U-Boats. The attack on the British land cruisers was just one of the many attacks in the War used by U-Boats one of the attacks later ended up getting the US involved in the war. -
Allies defeat Germans at the first battle.
Between September 5th through September 12th the battle of Marne took place which was the first battle of World War 1 at the Marne River. The Allies powers ended winning the battle after a long 7 day battle. Originally Germans planned to invade France to end the war within 40 days and secure victory. In the end the Germans plan did not work and it ended in defeat for the Germans. -
Ottoman Empire declares war on Allies
On November 14th 1914 Sheik-ul-Islam declares an war on behalf of the Ottoman government declaring war on the allies.The Ottoman Empire joins the Central Powers since the Ottoman Empire would have been left vulnerable as all the other countries are fighting. They also saw opportunities to win back land that they had lost during previous wars and become a partner and ally with Germany -
Attack on Lusitania
On May 7th 1915 German U- Boats had sunk a British land cruiser Lusitania. Out of the 1,198 passengers dead from the sinking of Lusitania 128 of them were American passengers who were killed which wasn't taken well in America. The Germans had sunk Lusitania since there were weapons on board on the ship. -
Germany starts attacking Verdun
On February 21st 1916 one of the longest and blondest wars of WW1 was started. 300,000 people were killed during the battle of Verdun. The Germany army wanted to crush France allies before the war started. On December 18 1916 after 9 long months France wins the battle of Verdun. -
Zimmermann Telegraph
Arthur Zimmermann a German Foreign Secretary sent a note Mexico asking to join them in the war in the United States joined. If Mexico had agreed Germany would have given Mexico money and help them regain Arizona, new Mexico and Texas. Mexico had rejected the offer from Germany and did not join the war. -
United States enters the war
On April 6th 1917 the United States officially entered World War 1. On April 4th 1917 the U.S senate approves America declaring war on Germany and just 2 days later war was officially declared on Germany from America. The German U-Boats taking down ship Lusitania and the Zimmermann Telegraph were the main reasons that America had finally joined the war. With America joining the war the central powers had gained another ally. -
America arrives in France
On June 24th 1917 America arrives in France to help out the allies. 14,000 soldiers arrived in France on June 24th with many more to arrive soon. By May 18th their was over one million troops in France. 500,000 of the American troops were fighting on the Front lines. -
President Wilson's 14 points
On January 8th 1918 President Wilson introduces his 14 points on how to end World War 1 and keep peace. The allies do not agree with Wilson idea and instead they want to punish Germany. United States and Italy left the conference leaving the peace settlement to France and Britain. France and Britain heavy punish Germany leaving powerless so they wouldn't be able to start another war. -
Russia leaves War
Officially on March 18th 1918 Russia leaves the war. Russia leaves the war because during the war was taking place the country was going through a revolution. Russia signs a peace treaty with Germany to leave war. -
Armistice
On November 11th 1918 Armistice is signed putting a hold on fighting during World War 1. After around 3 years of fighting it was finally put to behind. After Armistice was signed President Willison and leaders from Italy France and Britain work on Treaty of Versailles to end the war. -
Treaty of Versailles is signed ending War
On June 28th 1919 the Treaty of Versailles is signed ending war. France and Germany are finally at peace and war is over. The Treaty of Versailles leaves Germany powerless almost wiping out their whole army.
