Montag gets arrested because Captain Beatty finds out that he has books hidden. He is forced to burn his house himself only to be arrested after he is finished. Then he makes a quick escape before they can arrest him by burning Captain Beatty.

After Montag manages to escape he takes his clothes off and changes into Professor Faber's clothes to disguise his scent and floats down stream across the railroad tracks to find a group of renegade intellectuals or "The Book People" led by a name Granger who welcomes him to the group.
