Share cropping was a system used in the south that provided jobs for free slaves. After being declared free, some slaves struggled to find jobs without the help of the freedmen's bureau. This caused them to turn back to old plantation owners in hopes of finding one. Many times, the system of share cropping caused freedmen to be in a spiral of debt where owners were taking most of their crops. -
