2 weeks after Tariq leaves and making plans to leave Kabul, Laila's parents are blown up and Laila is severely injured.

Laila considered aborting Zalmai because she didn't want to have Rasheed's baby. After his birth, he loves him just as much as Aziza. Laila had to have Zalmai in a very sketchy and unsafe hospital because of the harsh rules of the Taliban.

Due to the drought and Rasheed's loss of income, the family struggles to eat and they have to sell a lot of their poccessions. Shortly after, Aziza is sent to live in an orphanage until they can find more food. They tell Aziza its a school.

After she turns herself in to protect the rest of her family, Miriam is shot in the head at the arena.

Laila finds out that Rasheed had paid the man to tell her that Tariq was dead. Tariq shows up at their house and wants to see Laila again.

Laila punches Rasheed back during one of his raids. He starts strangling Laila and Miriam goes and gets a shovel. She ends up killing Rasheed by hitting him in the head because she doesn't want Laila to be killed.

They work at the hotel. Aziza is happy about Tariq but Zalmai is still warming up to him.

Al Queda attacked the World Trade Centers in New York City. The United States declared war on Afghanistan. Laila and Tariq see it on the hotel lobby tv. Tariq thinks that the U.S.'s help will be beneficial in the end, but Laila is apprehensive. -
Laila really wants to be back in Kabul. On their way there, she stops to visit Mullah, Miriam's old teacher. His son takes her to the kolba that Miriam used to live in. He gives her a locked box that contains a movie, money, and a letter from Jalil.
