Lithuania was founded in 1253. By the end of the14th century Lithuania was the largest state in Europe. An alliance with Poland in 1386 led the two countries into a Union through the person of a common ruler. In 1569 Lithuania and Poland formally united into a single dual date, the Polish-Lithuania commonwealth.

Lithuanians act of Independence was signed on February 16 1918 declaring re-establishment of a Sovereign State. It declared Lithuania as an independent republic organized Sovereign State.

Soviet Union recognizes Lithuanians independence under the Treaty of Moscow.

The Soviet army invades Lithuania. Lithuania is now incorporated into the USSR.

Lithuania is occupied by German troops. In June 1941the Germans invaded the Soviet Union. One week later the Nazis controlled over all Lithuania. At this time, Lithuania believed the Germans were freeing their people from the oppressive Soviets and had hoped that they would restore peace within there country. Later In this time period approximately 240,000 Jews were massacred in Lithuania by the Nazis.

The Soviet Union conquered Lithuania again. Lithuania was thankful that the Soviet Union saved them from the Germans. The Soviet Union re-established the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic.

During this time period more then 120000 people are deported from Lithuania to live in forced settlements in Siberia and other parts of the Soviet Union. Local people tried to resist against the Soviet Regime but were unsuccessful.

The Reform Movement of Lithuania is formed and declares a program of democratic and national rights.

Lithuania becomes an Independent state and called themselves the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania. Lithuania is the first of the Soviet Republics to declare independence

The Lithuanian government bands the Communist Party and is admitted to the United Nations.

Russian troops withdrawal is completed. The Lithuanian military built itself an air force, navy and land army.

Lithuania applies to become a member of NATO.

Lithuania is invited to join the European Union and NATO.
