Lowell girls were girls who worked in textile factory mills. Lowell girls were underpaid and worked for long hours but were offered educational opportunities and a boarding room. Andrew Jackson was called "King Jackson" because he vetoed a lot of documents. Jackson did not really get along with anyone and was known for resembling "king like" behaviour. The temperance movement prohibited the sale of alcohol. Reverend Charles C, Finney believed alcohol caused people to commit acts of sin. Kansas-Nebraska Act

The Kansas-Nebraska Act divided Louisiana into two territories and erased the 36 30 line, putting in popular sovereignty. Stephen Douglas wanted the transcontinental railroad built through Chicago, Illinois to help it grow in trade and commerce. The South did not want the North to get the first railroad west.
