NATO
NATO was an agreement among several Western European nations, the United States, and Canada to form a military alliance known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The countries promised to support one another if one of them were to be attacked. NATO had its own military force and war equipment such as planes and tanks.

The Korean War
World War II had left North and South Korea- two different countries divided at the 38th parallel. North Korea was communist whereas South Korea was democratic. North Korea invaded South Korea by crossing the 38th parallel, triggering the Korean War. Truman sent in troops to support South Korea in an attempt to prevent a further spread of communism. The war ended in a stalemate.

"Bay of Pigs" Invasion
Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to secretly train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba in hopes of creating an uprising and ultimately overthrow the communist government under Castro. Kennedy was elected and agreed to follow through with Eisenhower's plan. The invasion was largely unsuccessful, many exiles were killed or imprisoned and the United States failed to prevent communism in Cuba.

Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union was supplying Cuba with nuclear weapons. Soviet missile bases in Cuba were established from which missiles could easily reach the United States. Kennedy said that if there was a missile attack on the U.S. from Cuba, the United States would attack the Soviet Union. After a few tense days, Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba if the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba. The U.S. removed missiles from Turkey as well.

Kennedy's Assassination
Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a limoisine in Dallas, Texas. He was shot in the head and died at the hospital. Lydon B. John took over office after Kennedy's death.

The Vietnam War
Undere LBJ's presidency, Americans grew more interested in preventing the spread of communism. In Vietnam, anti-communist nationalists controlled the south while Ho Chi Minh (a communist leader) took over the north. The U.S. became involved in the Vietnam war to halt the expansion of communism.

Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe
The day the Berlin wall came down, on November 9, 1989, communism ended in Eastern Europe. The wall divided communist eastern Berlin and democratic western Berlin.

Persian Gulf War
President Bush launched Operation Desert Storm which would free Kuwait from Iraqi control. If Iraq controlled oil supplies from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, it would jeopardize U.S. oil supply. The U.S. along with their allies lauched an air assault on Iraq and several days later Kuwait was liberated.

Collapse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union dissolved after Mikhail Gorbachev resigned which made Boris Yeltsin the president of Russia. Gorbachev had implemented radical reforms while serving as the leader of the Soviet Union causing 11 soviet republics to leave the Soviet Union.

September 11th Terrorist Attacks
On September 11, the United States was attacked by al-Qaeda, an Islamic terrorist group. Airplanes flew into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the other (believed the be heading to the White House) crashed in Pennsylvania. Around 3,000 people died in the 9/11 attacks.

War in Iraq
The United States and Great Britain invaded Iraq and defeated their military. The Iraq War was in response to 9/11 and the fact that Iraq supported terrorist groups and was heavily armed. Iraqi uprisings fought back and after the violence lowered, the United States started to bring their troops back home.
