Role of Agriculture

1650

Early modern Britain and Ireland was an agricultural society. During this medieval period work was a lot more physically demanding and many people lived off of the land to survive (more commonly known as Subsistence) Rich people found life a lot more manageable as they could comfortably participate in various sports like sailing, tennis and hunting (which was banned for others) The most sport that was performed in public were activities such as bare-knuckle fighting and dog fighting.

Industrial Revolution

1760

19th century life was difficult due to the very unsanitary and physically demanding work conditions. Mining and factory work was most of the work done at this time and people who worked during this time didn't have extra pay and worked long hours. There were a lot less sporting opportunities in cities due to the lack of space with the middle class being the most common spectators in sport. Due to the Industrial Revolution cities began to grow, conditions were cramped and work hours increased.

Increase In Wages

1840

Industrialization has enormously positive impacts on wages, productivity, wealth generation, social mobility and standard of living. During industrialization, all wages tend to rise, though the wages of some rise much faster than others.

Factory Act (Saturday Half Day)

1850

The Factory Act of 1850 or (Saturday Half Day) was an act that focused on a few key provisions in relations to the workplace. Women and young people could only work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the winter time and subject to approval by a factory inspector from around 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Since they were to be allowed 90 minutes total breaks during the day, the maximum hours worked per day increased to 10.5.

Impact of Public Schools

1850

Certain schools were called public schools because they were not privately owned but controlled by a group of Trustees. Trustee's are influential people responsible for managing and promoting an organisation or asset such as a school. These schools had a huge impact on the creation, development and organisation of sport and games as they aimed to educate the future leaders of society building on Leadership Skills, Taught Social Order and Preparation for service of country.

First official game between 2 official FA teams

The first exhibition game using FA rules was played. The members of the opposing teams for this game were chosen by the President of the FA (A. Pember) and the Secretary (E. C. Morley) and included many well-known footballers of the day

Societies Registration Act (Introduction Of Rules)

1860

The Societies Registration Act, 1860 is a legislation in India which allows the registration of entities generally involved in the benefit of society - education, health, employment etc. The British Indian Empire, with a wish to encourage such activities and to promote the formal organisation of groups of like minded people, incorporated the Act 21 of 1860, in other words, The Societies Registration Act, 1860, which came into force on 21 May 1860

FA is formed

First Game with the FA's new founded rules

Education Act

1870

The 1870 Education Act stands as the very first piece of legislation to deal specifically with the provision of education in Britain. It allowed voluntary schools to carry on unchanged, but established a system of school boards to build and manage schools in areas where they were needed. The boards were locally elected bodies which drew their funding from the local rates. Unlike the voluntary schools, religious teaching in the board schools wasn't to be compulsory.

World War I, also known as the Great War, began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His murder catapulted into a war across Europe that lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction.

Up until the war, women were perceived in a certain way in society. Their role was traditionally to stay in the home. As can often be the case following conflict between countries, World War One resulted in the political map of Europe being reshaped. Countries' borders moved and there was arguing over who would rule where. Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany lost about a tenth of its lands. Further treaties saw Bulgaria, Austria and Hungary all lose territory too.

Royal Appearance at Wembley

The first time a Royal family member was at the FA cup final in 1923, this became a tradition as since then a member of the royal family gives the winners the FA Cup to the victors after the match. King George V was the royal member that attended and he was the one to present Tottenham Hotspur with the trophy after the Final had came to an end.

WW2

1939

Rising to power in an economically and politically unstable Germany, Adolf Hitler (Nazi Party) rearmed the nation and signed strategic treaties with Italy and Japan to further his ambitions of world domination. Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. Among the estimated 45-60 million people killed were 6 million Jews murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of Hitler’s diabolical Holocaust.

Education Act Updated

1944

The Education Act 1944 made major changes in the provision and governance of secondary schools in England and Wales. It is also known as the "Butler Act" after the President of the Board of Education, R. A. Butler. Historians consider it a "triumph for progressive reform," and it became a core element of the post-war consensus supported by all major parties. The Act was repealed in steps with the last parts repealed in 1996.

Wage Cap Removed

The 20 pound wage cap is removed, this allows players to be able to use the sport as a profession, this makes the standard of football better. If this wage cap had never been removed we may not of seen such big transfers now.

England Win the World Cup

In 1966 England win the world , they did this by beating west Germany 4-2. This game was played at Wembley stadium in front of 98'000.

First Celebrity Mentality

George best is the first player to really take to the fame and this breeds the way for a whole different type of footballer and is what some will say helped create the lifestyle of todays footballers.

Penalty Shootout Introduced

FIFA introduce the penalty shoot out to decide who wins in the football match if there is a draw , this makes people more drawn to cup matches as for a spectator the penalty shoot out is a good spectacle.

First Female International

This meant that females sport was advancing as it allowed that extra step for females to aim to get at, this also allowed room for more competitions meaning a rise in sponsorships.

First Big Foreign Signings

Argentinian world cup winners sign for Tottenham hotspur, this is huge as it paves the way for more foreign players to join the premier league. This is shown by the way there are many foreign players in the premier league today.

First Million Pound Player

1979

Trevor booking signs for a 1 million pound transfer fee, this was unheard of then and it showed that the money in football was increasing. This transfer allowed teams to start spending more money in football as everyone wanted to be the best.

Bradford City Tragedy

May 11, 1985

A fire killed many people who went to watch the football match. This meant that teams started to start to take safety measures and improve the stands.

Hillsborough Disaster

This caused teams to start to put a limit on how many people could attend games as Hillsborough killed hundreds of Liverpool fans. There is still a long investigation as to what caused the tragedy.

Premier League Formed

The FA agree a deal for 304 million pounds for five years. This again meant that football was becoming more of a business and allowed merchandise and football to increase.

Abramovich buys Chelsea

Billionaire owners starts to see Football as a good business opportunity, Chelsea started to attract all the big players as they have such high money input and can meet the players demands.

New Wembley Opened

Neymar, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015 joined PSG in a world-record €222million deal in 2017. He helped the team to their first UCL final last year but PSG suffered defeat against Bayern at the final hurdle. His transfer marked the most expensive transfer in the history of Football that is still the top transfer to date.
