    First Western Contact. The Portuguese landed in Japan and impressed the Japanese with their technology. The Portugese began trading by trading Chinese goods to Japan, as the Chinese didn't want to trade with the Japanese.

During this time Japan proposed to change a racial equality clause to the league of nations which was rejected by United States, Britain & Australia. Arrogance and racial discrimination towards them really pissed them off ! This ruined the japanese-western relations.

    This was a period of great suffering for the Japanese. Economic depression spread, exports declined and bankruptcies became frequent. The Japanese withdrew from the League of Nations and fell more and more under the control of right-wing militarist expansionists. Eventually this led to war with the U.S. and a temporary expansion of the Japanese Empire but eventually the defeat of the country.

    The USA dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagashaki, two major manufacturing cities which produced arms and other neccessities for the war. The scare of the prospect of more nuclear bombs was more important than the actual damage, although actual damage was beyond severe.
