First Western Contact. The Portuguese landed in Japan and impressed the Japanese with their technology. The Portugese began trading by trading Chinese goods to Japan, as the Chinese didn't want to trade with the Japanese.

Japan is unified again, after over a hundred years of war. Oda Nobunaga and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated the warlords with Western technology introduced to them by the Portuguese.

1598 - Hideyoshi tried to invade Korea twice, but fails both times. After many defeats, he dies and troops are eventually withdrawed.

Japan closed off to other countries and severely limited trade because the Tokugawa shogunate didn't want contanct with other countries. They tried to increase economical growth, scricten social behaviour to a certain standard/ type.

Meiji Restoration. Previously, the shogunates held real power while the emperor was ceremonial. The 15th Tokugawa shogun resigns and gives real power to the emporor. The shoguns previously wanted to maintain a traditional Japan, but this meant that they were socially and technologically behind the west. The Tokugawa era found an end in the Meiji Restoration. The emperor Meiji was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo which became the new capital; his imperial power was restored. The Meiji Period [1868-1912]

Issues between China Japan and Korea led to the Sino Japanese War. Japan defeated China and got Taiwan but were forced by Russia, France and Germany to return their terrotiry.

Russia and Japan War which happened because of a military conflict led to the Russo Japanese War. The japanese also won this war gaining more terrotiry and international respect as they were the first Asian country to defeat a European power.

World War 1 breaks out putting Britain, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, USA and Japan against Austria, Germany and Turkey. Japan joined these forces but played a very little role fighting german forces. During this time Japan proposed to change a racial equality clause to the league of nations which was rejected by United States, Britain & Australia. Arrogance and racial discrimination towards them really pissed them off ! This ruined the japanese-western relations.

This was a period of great suffering for the Japanese. Economic depression spread, exports declined and bankruptcies became frequent. The Japanese withdrew from the League of Nations and fell more and more under the control of right-wing militarist expansionists. Eventually this led to war with the U.S. and a temporary expansion of the Japanese Empire but eventually the defeat of the country.

The Japanese forces took over almost the whole coast of China and created horror for the Chinese population. However, the Chinese government never surrendered completely for a long time.

They believed this would disable the United States naval fleet for the duration of the war, but provoked the US to join the war with great verociously.

World war 2 ended forcing Japan to retreat from the land it occupied. The unsuccessful war costed Japan much of their people, recources, money and confidence. This gave way to the Showa Period

The USA dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagashaki, two major manufacturing cities which produced arms and other neccessities for the war. The scare of the prospect of more nuclear bombs was more important than the actual damage, although actual damage was beyond severe.
