  • First Telescope Observations

    First Telescope Observations
Galileo Galilei made the first telescope observations on a homemade telescope. He observed moons around Jupiter, lunar craters, and the phases of Venus.
  • The Principia was first published

    The Principia was first published
The Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica or Principia was first published in Latin. These 3 books were by sir Isaac Newton, and they were based on Newton's laws of motion, Newton's law of universal gravitation, and Kepler's laws of planetary motion. The Principia ended up being one of the most important books in science because it set a base for how the universe works.
  • First Liquid Fueled Rocket

    First Liquid Fueled Rocket
Robert H. Goddard launches the first liquid fueled rocket in the world.
  • The Aggregate Series begins

Wernher Von Braun from Germany starts the Aggregate Series of rockets which latter lead to the V-2 rocket.
  • Crossing the Kármán Line

Wernher Von Braun of the V-2 rocket military program launches the first vehicle to cross the Kármán Line (62 miles above earths surface) and make it into outer space.
  • USA Research

The United States captured and improved the V-2 rocket for cosmic radiation experiments.
  • The First Pictures

The United States take the first pictures of earth from the V-2; 65 miles above the ground
  • The First Animals In Space

The United States send the first animals into space. These first animals are just fruit flies on the modified V-2.
  • Sputnik

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik ( the first man made satellite) into space
  • Sputnik II

    Sputnik II
The Soviet Union launched Sputnik II with Liaka (a dog) on board. The dog was not expected to survive the journey home so they chose a dog from the streets. Liaka burned up in the atmosphere.
  • Van Belts

    Van Belts
Explorer 1 -from the USA- confirmed that the Van Belts existed. The Van belts were partials of radiation thought to be brought by solar winds and we're now trapped in earths magnetic field, and could potentially be of harm too any satellites
  • Luna 1

    Luna 1
Luna one is the first artificial satellite to reach the moons vicinity and the first artificial satellite to in heliocentric orbit (also known as circumsolar orbit)
  • Luna 1

Luna 1 was a launched on a Soviet Union rocket, that was the first rocket to enter earth's orbit. Luna 1 helped discover the first signs of solar winds.
  • Luna 2

The USSR launched Luna 2 and it achieved being the first man object to land on the moon.
  • M-R 2

    M-R 2
The USA launched M-R 2 into space with Ham the chimpanzee. It resulted in the first actions performed in space.
  • Vostok 1

    Vostok 1
The USSR launched the first human into space (Yuri Gagarin). This was the first human-crewed mission in the history of space travel. America had wanted to launch the first human into space, and this event was the first major acomplishment of the space race. The space race was a competition between America and the Soviet Union that started in 1955 and ended in 1972
  • Apollo 8

    Apollo 8
The USA launched their second human manned craft on Apollo 8. It became the first space craft to leave earth's orbit, and it also was the first mission to make it to the moons orbit and back. Frank Boarman, James Lovell and William Anders were the first to see the entire planet Earth, Earthrise, and the far side of the moon
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo 11
The USA (NASA) landed the first people on the moon. This achieved president Kennedy's goal of landing on the moon by the end of the 60s. This also put America way ahead in the space race. The crew of Apollo 11 included Neil Armstrong (the commander, and the first man on the moon), Buzz Aldrin( the lunar module pilot) and Micheal Collings (the command module pilot)
  • Lunokhod 1

The USSR launched the first lunar rover on lunokhod 1. It was the first of two remote controlled lunokhod lunar rovers to land on the moon, and there was one before it that failed to reach orbit.
  • Mars 2

The USSR launched Mars 2 in a series of Mars lander missions that made impact on Mars. Mars 2 was the first man made object to make impact on Mars.
  • Viking Lander

NASA launched the Viking lander which collected the first soil samples from the surface of Mars
  • Pioneer 10

    Pioneer 10
The USA launched pioneer ten and it became the first space craft to pass beyond all solar planets. It's original mission was to make it to Jupiter.
  • STS-41-B

    STS-41-B
The USA completed the first untethered space walk, done by Bruce McCandless II
  • The last mission of challenger

The USA planned tracking and data relay satellite deployment, but there was a loss of vehicle and crew because the shuttle fell apart on the launch pad killing the six astronauts and the teacher that was planned to go into space flight
  • Voyager one

    Voyager one
Took the first photograph of the whole solar system, voyager one is still traveling today
  • The Hubble Space Telescope

    The Hubble Space Telescope
With a rough start to the space telescope project (it was originally funded in the 70's and the proposed launch was in 1983) the USA finally launched Hubble into space only to find the lense had been ground wrong. They sent a mission to fix it and now it takes awesome pictures. The Hubble first went into service on May 20th and is planned to last until at least 2030.
  • Galileo mission

    Galileo mission
The USA completed the first asteroid flyby by the asteroid 951 Gaspra at 1,600 kilometers.
  • Mars Pathfinder

    Mars Pathfinder
The first mission in a series of Mars rover missions, and the first sucsessful lander mission since the two Viking mission in the 70's. The Soviet Union had attempted to land a rover on Mars after the lunokhod missions, but the attempts failed.
  • The International space station

The first station in space that was used and funded by many nations. It is (and always has been) the biggest man made object in space
