Brooklyn Bridge
After 13 years of construction, the Brooklyn Bridge was opened in 1883. This bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the U. S. and connects New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. When it was originally opened, the bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world. -

The Washington Monument was dedicated in 1885. It is a granite monument that was made as a tribute to George Washington. It is 555 feet high, and faces the White House. -
Haymarket Square Riot
On May 4th, 1886, at the Haymarket Square in Chicago, and unidentified individual threw a pipe bomb at police who were trying to disperse the Labor Rally which was in support of striking workers at the McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. plant. The bomb killed eight police officers and several civilians. -
Oklahoma Land Rush
On April 22, 1889, over 50,000 people lined up to claim a part of the 2 million acres that had just been made available under the Indian Appropriations Bill. Even though the land had been owned by Indians, the U. S. government had made it legal for settlers to claim up to 160 acres each. To attain this land, settles had to live on their land and improve it according to the Homestead Act of 1862. -
Sherman Antitrust Act
Passed on July 2, 1890, the Sherman Antitrust Act was the first Federal statute to limit cartels and monopolies to prevent the artificial raising of prices by restriction of trade or supply. -
Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War began after Spain rejected America's ultimatum to withdraw from Cuba. In the end, the U. S. defeated the Spanish and gained control over Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
