  • Enlightenment

    The Enlightenment wasn’t restricted to France. The Enlightenment gave us modern science. The Enlightenment grew out of the Protestant Reformation and Italian Renaissance.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

    Many American colonists refused to pay Stamp Act tax. The American colonists were angered by the Stamp Act and quickly acted to oppose it. Stamp Act influenced constitutional safeguards, First Amendment.
  • Sons of Liberty

    organization formed in the American colonies in the summer of 1765 to oppose the Stamp Act. The origins of the Sons of Liberty are unclear.
  • Townshend Act of 1767

    Townshend Act of 1767

    Townshend did not live to see the impact of the acts because he died suddenly in 1767. Portions of the revenue generated by the Townshend Acts were to be used to pay Colonial officials wages that ensured their loyalty to the Crown. The resentment over the Townshend Acts divided American colonists into patriots and loyalists.

  • Battle of Trenton

    the morale in the Continental Army was at a low after losses at the Battle of White Plains in October and at Forts Washington and Lee in November. Chased by the British, General Washington retreated across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania. His force, in threadbare uniforms and many without shoes, was reduced to a few thousand and enlistments were set to expire.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    60 French soldiers died and 194 were injured. The battle lasted about 20 days. George Washington refused to accept one part of the surrender terms.
  • The Great Compromise

    The Great Compromise promised the creation of a bicameral legislature composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives would grant states a number of representatives proportionate to the population, while the Senate would grant two representatives for each state.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    It determined that three out of every five slaves were counted when determining a state's total population for legislative representation and taxation.
  • Constitution is ratified

    The U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1788, is the oldest written national constitution still in use. The bill of rights, separation of power, and all the checks and balances. 13 original U.S. states ratified the Constitution.
