James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891. The first official game of basketball
The first offical game took place on January 20, 1892. Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals in Springfield, Massachusetts, sought an indoor game of vigor and grace to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters.he wrote up some basic rules, nailed up a peach basket on the gym wall, and got his students to start playing his new game. -
Getting paid to Play
"The setting was Trenton, the thriving capital city of New Jersey. The date was November 7, 1896. The place was Masonic Temple, a multi-purpose building in downtown Trenton. The event was a basketball game between the Trenton Basketball Team and the Brooklyn YMCA. The significance was that the game "presumably" represented the first professional contest in which the players were paid to play." -

The first black people to play professional basketball
Lloyd, Cooper, and Clifton entered the National Basketball Association in 1950 and became pioneers for today's African-American basketball players. Cooper was the first African-American to be drafted by an NBA team. Clifton was the first to sign an NBA contract and make the team. And on Oct. 31, 1950, Lloyd, a member of the Washington Capitols, became the first African-American to play in an NBA game when he entered a game against the Rochester Royals. -
