Known as the bloodiest day in U.S. Military History, McClellan and supperior forces stopped Gen. Robert E. Lee at Antietam Maryland. Lee withdrawals to Virginia after 26,000 men are dead, wounded, or missing by night.

After 12,653 men lost after 14 frontal assaults in Fredericksburg Virginia the Potomac Army under Gen. Burnside is defeated. The Confederates led by Lee only lost 5,309 men.

Lee defeats Union Army General Hooker at Chanellorsville in Virginia. The Union had 17,000 dead missing or wounded to the Confederates 13,000.

This was the last Confederate steong hold. They surrendered to Gen. Grant after a six week siege. Inevitably the Union took control of the Mississippi. This cut the Confederacy off from their Western allies.

I didn't find a specific date on when it opened but it said that the first prisoners were brought in late Febuary of 1864

These battles started when Gen. Grant with 120,000 men began moving to Richmond. They were going to fight Lee's army of 64,000 men. This began a war of attrition that includes other major battles.

Grant marched his Union Army South in hopes of capturing the Spotsylvania courthouse. Lee's army got infront of Grant'd\s and managed to block the road leading to a big war.

He died May 10 of 1864 because of injuries.

by June 2nd the armies had a 7 mile front. General Lee's right flank was supposed to be attacked by Grant to cut Lee off. With that not happened it gave Lee's troops enough time to build a line of trenches. General Grant attacked and slaughtered the Confederates at all points. Grant pulled out of Cold Harbor and tried to flank Lee's men at Petersburg.
