On this day, Abraham Lincoln is assasinated in Ford's theater, by John Wilkes Booth in 1865 on Good Friday. This was the first presidential assassination and left a large scar on the United States.

Grant took over for Johnson, and had been very close with Lincoln during the war. He was still dealing with the problems of Reconstruction but slowly the States was getting back on track
