The Civil War starts!
One of the main cause's of the Civil war was slavery. The North part of America was against slavery and the south was with it. The day that the Civil War officialy began was April 12, 1861 and it started with the the battle at Fort Sumter. The battle lasted for days, April 12-13. General P.G.T. Beauregard was in comand of the confederate army and he desided to take the federal fort, Fort Sumter. Major Robert Anderson who was the garrison commander surrendered the fort at 2:30 PM Aprill 13. -
The first Battle of Bull Run
The first major battle of the Civil War was the battle of Bull Run. This battle took place in Fairfax County, Virginia. This battle was a terrible loss for the union however the confederates stood firm because General Andrew Thomas Jackson (aka: Stonewall Jackson) stood in the way of the Union and eliminated the threat to the confederates goal. This event is important because it was the first major land battle that resulted in a confederate victory. -
Battle of the Iron Clad
This battle is important because it was the first fight between two "ironclad" ships in history. The confederates had an Iron clad called "The Merrimac" and the North had one called "The Monitor". They met each other in Norfolk, Virgina and began firing at each other. Seeing that neither of the ships was taking any serious damage they ended with a draw and headed their separate ways. This battle changed history in the fact that it made wood ships obsolete. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh took place by Pittsburg Landing in Tennessee. Ironic how "shiloh" means "peace" beacuse it was one of the bloodiest battles of the whole Civil War. This battle was important because it let the union expand through Tenesee and this battle eventually led up to the Confederate loss in Vickburg, Virginia. This was a very crucial battle for the Union's strategy of capturing the Mississippi Riveer and dividing the south in half. -
The Seven Days Battle
The Seven Days battle was indeed seven days. There were six battles and the battles took place frm June 25 to July 1 of 1862. These battles were important because afterwards General George McClellan was deemed unfit for action because he lost. He went up against General Robert E. Lee and outnumbered the confederates greatly. However, Lee outsmarted McClellan with his wit and beat him by tricking him into thinking that the confederates had many more soldiers that they actually had. Afterward -
Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was a good victory for the North. However it is considered the bloodiest day in the entirety of the Civil War. This is because around 5000 troops died, and 18000 were wounded. This event is important because this gave Lincoln a green light to issue the Emancipation Proclamation which would change history, -
The Emancipation Proclamation Issued
The Emancipation Proclamation was a very important document that was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on New Years Day of 1863. This day was very important because this document freed all of the slaves. It stated "that all persons held as slaves" within rebellious states "are, and henceforth shall be freed." This is thanks to the victory at Antietam because Lincoln needed a straight win in order to announce such a bold thing. -
Battle at Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a three day battle lasting from July 1-3 of 1863. This battle was the turning point of the war because the plan the the great General Robert E. Lee had to invade the North and end the war failed. Lee moved to the north in order to draw Ulysses S. Grants men away from Vicksburg. Then when nothing seemed to work he made his last attempt for victory called Pickett's Charge and utterly lost. This was the beginning of the end for the south and the start of the victory -
Seige at Petersburg
The siege of Petersburg was a series of battles around the cities of Richmond and Peterburg, Virginia. They were fought from Jun 9,1864 to March 25, 1865. These are important because it forced General Lee out and ultimately led to his surrender at the Appomatox Courthouse. It was also considered to be one of the earliest uses of trench warfare which would be used in World War I. -
Fall of Richmond
This event was important because Richmond was the confederate's capitol and the fall of their capitol means that war is over for the south. On the Evening of April 2, 1865, the confederate government fled the city with the army right behind them. The Union Army came and took the city, though many lives were lost, the North took the confederate's capitol and won the war.
