Papa Dies
Dave's papa fell off the roof of a house he was helping to build and died, leaving Dave without a mother or a father because his mother died of complications from Dave's birth. -
No one wants Dave
Ida doesn't want Dave or Gideon anymore because she's so depressed about Abe dying and she says that she can't afford to feed them. Gideon gets a home with Uncle Jack, who absolutely loves Gideon, leaving Dave by himself. -
Hebrew Home for Boys
Dave, after no one wanted him, is dropped off at the Hebrew Home for Boys. -
Dave's carving is taken
Mr. Bloom steals Dave's posessions, including the carving of Noah's Ark that was made by Dave's father. -
Dave meets Irma Lee
Dave meets Irma Lee at the rent party, and they soon become friends. -
Dave sneaks out
Dave sneaks out of the HHB and finds a dollar on the street. When he picks it up, a man named Solly comes and lets Dave keep the dollar. Solly then brings Dave to a rent party where both of them pretend to be fortune tellers. -
First Art Class
Mr. Hillinger teaches an art class at the HHB. Dave really likes to draw, and realizes that there's at least one good thing about the HHB. -
Dave sneaks out to get rope
Dave sneaks out to the janitor's closet to get a rope so he can escape and go to Irma Lee's party. -
Alfie is sent away
Alfie, one of Dave's friends who is very sick, is sent to a different place, where he can be taken care of. -
Irma Lee's Birthday
It is Irma Lee's birthday, and Solly takes Dave out of the HHB. While at the party, Dave hatches a plan for when he runs away from the HHB to stay at Irma Lee's house. Also, he steals food from the party to bring back to his buddies. -
Dave makes HHB better
After Irma Lee told Dave he could live with her, he knew he needed to get the carving back and escape as soon as possible. While he's still there though, he tricks Moe to stop taking his food, comes up with an idea to get the carving back, becomes better friends with his buddies, and starts to not want to leave. -
Special Classes
Mr. Hillinger says Dave is "gifted" and that he wants Dave to take special classes on Thursdays. Dave likes the HHB even more now, and he decides he doen't want to leave anymore. -
Dave runs away
Dave decides this is the day that he will try to steal back his carving. He goes to Mr. Bloom's office and gets the carving, but as he's putting the keys back, Mr. Bloom comes in and catches Dave. Dave runs away from him and goes to Aunt Sarah's and Aunt Lily's house. They want him to go back to the HHB, so he runs away again. -
Dave finds Solly
Dave runs away from Aunt Lily and Sarah's house and runs to Solly's street. Finally he finds Solly. He tells Solly everything and Solly hatches an idea. -
Solly wants Dave
Dave is used to nobody wanting him. When Solly said he would adopt Dave, if Solly's health was better, Dave almost started crying. This shows what a big part they played in each other's lives. -
Bye Mr. Doom...Hello Mr. Bloom
Irma Lee's mother, Odelia Packer, is very rich and well-known. Solly, Irma Lee, and Odelia return Dave to the HHB. She threatens Mr. Bloom to take better care of the boys, and to not hit anyone again. Now Dave can be happy and safe in his home.
