This timeline highlights the key moments throughout Victor's day, from the early morning registration to the late afternoon trip to the library, capturing his journey through a day that could set the stage for a memorable year. -
Before School
Victor arrives at school and stands in line at a card table to register for classes. He selects French as his elective, hoping to be in the same class as Teresa, a girl he has liked for a long time. Victor meets his friend, Michael, at the water fountain. Michael is trying to look tough by scowling, inspired by a GQ magazine he read. Victor finds it strange but listens to Michael's explanation. -
Homeroom
Victor attends homeroom, where roll is taken and emergency cards are handed out. The principal, Mr. Belton, gives a welcome speech, but the students are not paying attention. Victor notices Teresa sitting two rows away and hopes they’ll have the same classes together. -
1st Period
The bell rings for first period, and students rush out of homeroom. Teresa lingers to ask the teacher about ballet, and Victor takes the opportunity to try to catch her eye. He smiles awkwardly at her as she leaves. In English class, Victor automatically says "Teresa" when asked for an example of a noun. The class laughs, and Victor blushes, realizing everyone knows he has a crush on her. -
Math Class
Victor struggles in math class, sitting in the back, hoping not to be called on. He finds the lessons confusing and is anxious about being asked to solve problems. -
Break and Lunch
During the 15-minute break and lunch, Victor eats with Michael, who continues to practice scowling. Victor looks around for Teresa but doesn’t see her. He eats slowly, distracted, and daydreams about her. -
French Class
Victor’s French class begins, and he is seated a few desks away from Teresa. He tries to impress her by speaking French but embarrasses himself when he mumbles incoherently. The teacher, Mr. Bueller, asks him to repeat his words, making the situation even more awkward. -
After French Class
After class, Victor feels humiliated but is relieved when Teresa says his French attempt was "good." He continues to feel awkward but agrees to help her with French. After French class, Victor attends metal shop and biology. He also goes to the public library to check out French textbooks, determined to improve his French skills.
