    Swedish singer Loreen becomes the first woman to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice , having previously won the contest in 2012. The contest, which began in 1956, is one of Europe’s most popular TV programmes regularly attracting more viewers than the Super bowl and the Academy Awards.

    With six consecutive months of record-breaking temperatures, 2023 is officially recognised by Copernicus (Europe’s Climate Change Monitoring Service) as the hottest year in recorded history. Between January and November, average temperatures were 1.46 degrees above pre-industrial average temperatures, meaning that it is more urgent than ever to act against climate change, if we want to respect the 1.5-degree limit agreed at COP 21 in Paris.

    The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre celebrates 60 years of nuclear safety and security research at their core site in Karlsruhe, Germany. This facility promotes collaboration across scientific, policy and industry nuclear research, with partners and stakeholders in 75 countries around the world. This ongoing work all stems from the EURATOM Treaty, signed in 1957.

    Jacques Delors dies
    Jacques Delors was President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995. He is considered to be one of its most impactful leaders. He launched the single market, enabling free movement of people, money, goods, and services across Europe. He also supervised the introduction of the Erasmus Programme to help students and university teachers move among EU countries in 1987. Furthermore, he began the efforts that lead to the Maastricht Treaty and the creation of the euro currency.
