She was born in Karnal, India on July 1, 1961. She was the first Indian American astronaut and first Indian woman in space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist. She also died on February 1, 2003. -
John Glenn
John Gleen became the 1st and 3rd American to orbit Earth, and later United States Senator. Glenn began his career as a Marine Corps fighter before joining NASA's Mercury program, NASA's original astronaunt group. -
Scott Carpenter
He flew into space, atop the Mercury-Atlas 7 rocket for a three-orbit science mission that lasted nearly five hours. His Aurora 7 spacecraft attained a high altitude of 164 miles and an orbital velocity of 17,532 mph. -

Judith Resnik
Judith Resnik was an American NASA astronaut who died when the Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed during the launch of mission STS-51-L. Resnik was the second American female astronaut, logging 145 hours in orbit. She was born on April 5, 1949. -

Mae Jemison was born on October 17, 1956, She is an African American NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle on September 12, 1992. In 2002, Mae Jemison became one of the 100 Greatest African Americans. -
1st female commander- Eileen Collins
Eileen Collins became the 1st female commander of the Space Shuttle, with the lauch of STS-93 Space Shuttle Columbia on a misson to launch the Chandra X-ray observatory.
