Sugar Act
1.) Lowered from 6 cents per gallon to 3 cents per gallon in order to control smuggling trades for sugar and molasses, but gave British courts the right to try colonial smugglers which took away power from the courts in the colonials
2.) The colonists didn't like this approach to smuggling as the colonial courts were often very lenient about smuggling because they also enjoyed smuggled rum! -
Stamp Act
1.) This act made all printed material have a stamp, with stamp not being free. This mainly affected printers and lawyers
2.) The colonist reacted by creating the Stamp Act Congress, which boycotted British goods. This was one of the first actions that brought the colonies together and acting united. -
Declaratory Act
1.) The act overviewed the Parliament's power to tax the American colonies without their say, showing full authority over the colonies.
2.) Along side this came the repeal of the Stamp act which many American saw as a victory, but weren't happy with the taxes to come after the Declaratory act. -
Townshend Act
1.) This act created new a board of customs to help the decline in smuggling.
2.) The colonists responded with a boycott, that women also joined in on over time (Daughters of Liberty, wanting to replace British clothing with homespun ones). -
Tea Act
1.) With tax exemptions and rebates from tea deriving from the British-East India Company, the Tea Act let the British give the conies cheap tea and in return lowed the price of tea.
2.) In response the colonist, dressed as Indians, threw equivalent to $4,000,000 worth of tea into the Boston harbor. This event is known as the Boston Tea Party.
