Graphical User Interface
After Apple Inc. engineers were granted 3 full days of access to the PARC facilities, Steve Jobs decided that all future computers would use graphical user interfaces(GUI). -
Release of the First Macintosh
After Jobs was pushed from the Lisa computer project, he too over the Macintosh and had a race with the Lisa team in terms of which computer would ship first. Although the Lisa team won, The Machintosh had better sales in comparison. -
Steve Jobs founded NeXT inc.
The result of a power struggle between Steve jobs and Jon Sculley. He left Apple Inc. and founded NeXT. Inc in the same year. -
DECLINE
During this period(until 1998), Apple Inc experienced a major decline in their business. -
Macintosh Portable
The Macintosh Portable was introduced and was made to have the same amount of power as the desktop Macintosh. It weighed 7.5kg and had a 12 hours battery life. In the same year, the PowerBook, another portable computer series, was introduced. System 7, a major software upgrade, was integrated into the computers which added colour to the interface and brought new networking capabilities. -
Alternate Platforms
During the 1990s, Apple was developing alternate platforms to improve their computers. The Macintosh needed a new replacement platform or edited to run better hardware. -
Power Macintosh
The Power Macintosh was introduced into the market. This was the first of many computers to use a PowerPC processor. -
Return of Steve Jobs
The current CEO, Michael Spindler, was replaced by Gil Amelio. He made many changes, one being to purchase neXT as well as it's neXTSTEP operating system. This brought Steve Jobs back into Apple, who then succeeded Gil Amelio after a three-year record-low stock price and crippling financial losses. -
Apple Online Store
On the 10th November 1997, Apple introduced the Apple Online Store where customers could browse and buy products as well as accessories associated with them. A certain build-to-order manufacturing strategy. -
iMac
The release of iMac was hugely beneficial and sold almost 800,000 units in the first 5 months alone. The iMac deisgn team was led by Jonathan Ive, who would later design the iPod and iPhone. Apple also decided to purchase Macromedia's Final Cut software which announced that they were looking to branch into video editing. They soon introduced iMovie, for consumers, and Final Cut Pro for the more professional. -
Return of Profitability
From here onwards, Apple Inc is no longer experiencing a decrease in their business. Instead, it's blooming quite well, and will develop into one of the largest companies in the world. -
Mac OS X
Apple released Mac OS X. They decided that to help consumers to smoothly transfer from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X, they would make it so that applications from Mac OS 9 would be still be usable. -
iLife Suite
Apple bought Nothing For Real for their advanced digital composing application, Shake. They also purchased Emagic for the music productivity applciation, Logic. This led to the production of GarageBand. iPhoto was also released in the same year which completed the iLife suite(iMovie, GarageBand, iPhoto). -
iTunes Store
Apple introduced the iTunes Store which would be able to integrate with iPod as well. The iTunes Store quickly became the market leader in online music services. -
Bootcamp
Apple introduced Bootcamp, which would assist users in installing a Windows platform on their Mac computers. -
Announcement of the iPhone
Steve Jobs delivered a Keynote speech and announced two things. One was the change from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc. due to the focus of the company no longer being computers alone. Second is the announcement of the new iPhone. -
Launch of App Store
Apple Inc. launched the App Store, with the capability to sell third-party applications, with over 60 million application downloads after only one month, with an average of $1 million a day. Due to the popularity of the iPhone, Apple Inc. has risen to become the third-largest mobile handset provider in the world. -
Revealing of the iPad
After several years of rumors and speculations on Apple Inc's new device, they finally revealed their tablet-like device called the iPad. It had the same touch-base operating system as the iPhone and the majority of iPhone applications were compatible with the iPad as well. This gave the iPad a very large selection of applications at launch. In the US, the iPad sold a staggering 300,000 units on the first day and 500,000 by the end of the week. -
Release of iCloud
In the presentation to introduce iCloud, Steve Jobs surprisingly made an appearance and unveil the cloud storage after having taken yet another medical leave of absence due to his poor health. iCloud would the Apple Inc's second attempt(after MobileMe) at online storage and syncing between devices. -
The Death of Steve Jobs
On the 5th of October 2011, Apple Inc announced the death of Steve Jobs, which marked the end of an era for Apple Inc. Steve Jobs has been showing signs of severe problems regarding his health and has taken multiple medical leaves of absence because of it. Although this may serve true, he was still the most influencial figure in Apple Inc in recent years, making Apple Inc. what it is today.
