  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    The War of 1812 was a conflict between the United States and Great Britain that started in 1812 and ended in 1815. The war was caused by Great Britain's impressment of American soldiers due to the restrictions of trade between the US and France. While this was happening the US wanted to expand into Canada while the British supported the Native Americans to resist the expansion of the US.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri applied to be a state causing a discourse on whether it should be a free or slave state. Ultimately it was decided a slave state which created an imbalance so Maine became a free state to regain the balance. When Missouri became a slave state the slavery boundary was made making it illegal for all states above the bottom line of Missouri would be illegal to have slaves except Missouri and all states below the line would allow slavery.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    Andrew Jackson created the Indian Removal Act which meant that all Native Americans living in the South East of the US would be relocated to the west territories. By removing the Native Americans the white settlers were able to take over their land to farm and live. The process of relocation was named the Trail of Tears due to the thousands of deaths from the harsh conditions the Native Americans faced on their journey west.
  • Texas Revolution

    Texas Revolution
    Texas wanted to gain its independence from Mexico because most of the population was white settlers with different cultural and political differences. The war began with The Siege of Bexar when Texas Revolutionaries led a siege that resulted in Texas getting their first major victory. This was followed by the most famous battle of the revolution The Battle of Alamo where Texas lost despite its heroic defense. Texas gained its independence becoming The Republic of Texas on March 2, 1836.
  • Mexican-American War

    Mexican-American War
    In 1846 Texas gained its independence from Mexico causing Mexico to see this as an act of aggression. Shortly after Texas joined the US there was an argument about where the border between Texas and Mexico should be. This led to a war with major battles such as the Battle of Veracruz, the Battle of Bueno Vista, and the siege of Mexico City. After America Captured Mexico's Capital they had no choice but to surrender and sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The US Congress attempted to fix the tensions between the North and South with the new territories being decided between free and enslaved. California became a free state, but New Mexico and Utah used popular sovereignty to decide. The Fugitive Slave Act was put into place however the Abolition of Slavery Trade was put into place in Washington DC but didn't stop slavery itself. Texas claimed New Mexico but agreed to trade it for $10 million.

    Bleeding Kansas was a war caused by a discourse on whether Kansas should be a free or slave state after the Missouri Compromise was repealed for the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Both settlers pro-slavery and anti-slavery moved to Kansas to try to influence the vote. With both parties moving to Kansas there was lots of tension that resulted in many raids and battles.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    The Dred Scott Decision was a court case in which an enslaved African American fought for his freedom following the Missouri Compromise, which states that if an enslaved person goes into a free state, they are also free. Scott had won the case at the lower levels but then got the case repealed by the Supreme Court, which ruled that black people aren't citizens, so Scott could not sue.

    Abraham Lincoln Election
    When Abraham Lincoln won the election the South feared losing slavery causing the majority of the Southern states to secede and create the Confederate States of America electing Jefferson Davis as their president. The confederacy having its government was looked at as a challenge and rebellion to the Union. The Civil War broke out in April 1861 after the confederates attacked Fort Sumter
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    The Civil War was the result of the disagreement on whether there should be slavery between the North and South states. The war began after the South formed the confederacy after seceding from the US. Many famous battles occurred such as the attack on Fort Sumpter, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Gettysburg. At the end of the war, the abolition of slavery was put into place, the US became one nation again, and the states entered the reconstruction era after rejoining the Union.
