Birth of John Locke
John Locke was born on August 29, 1632 to the parents of John Locke and Agnes Keene. He was born in a cottage home by a church in Wrington, England. He was named after his father. This event is signifiant because John Locke would go on to become a famous philosopher. ("John Locke-Biography") -
Providence and Rhode Island
In June of 1636, Roger Williams founded Rhode Island and Providence. This happened after Williams had been banished from Massachusetts. Once he was banned he decided he couldn't live with it so he did something bigger. This event was significant because even though Rhode Island is a very small state, a lot of people live in it and there are popular places in Rhode Island such as the Providence Place Mall. Taj Mahal completed
In 1643 the Taj Mahal was completed in India. It it one of the most beautiful monuments in the world. It was built by the Mughals and is made completely of white marble. This event was significant because it attracted many people to go see it and attracted many tourists to India. ("World History") -
Accepted to college
In 1647 John Locke got accepted into Westminster school in London. His education was sponsored by Alexander Popham who was a member or Parliament and once a commander for Locke's father. This event was significant because his education led to him being accepted into the Christ Church which allowed him to work with fellow philosophers which then lead him to his famous philosophy career. End of Thirty Years War
In 1648 the Thirty Years War ended. This war took place in Central Europe. Most European countries were involved in this long war. This event was significant because it was a thirty year time period in which battles were happening. The German population got cut in half from the beginning of the war to the end. Locke earns his masters degree
In 1658 John Locke earned his master's degree in philosophy. He was much more interested in the philosophy part of his courses rather than the normal material in his courses. He had already got his bachelor's degree in philosophy two years before this. This was significant because to have a career in philosophy like Locke did, he needed to get his master's degree. Charles II
In 1661 Charles II was crowned King of England. He took over Louis XIV. This was very important back then because it wasn't often that they got a new King. This event was significant because he ruled England differently so it effected not only England but other countries that were allies with. ("World History") -
Great Plague
The Great Plague occured in London in 1665. It was a series of plague epidemics that was very serious. London already had a plague in 1499 but this one was much more deadly, This event was significant because it killed 75,000 people in London. ("World History") -
Locke moves
In 1667 Locke moved to Shaftesbury's home at at Exeter House in London where he serves as Lord Ashley's personal physician. At this home he continued to study medicine and was guided by Thomas Sydenham. Locke gained great knowledge from Sydenham. This event was significant because since he moved he then learned medicine from Sydenham which gave him a lot more knowledge about it, Also, this gave him the idea to write about him and Sydenham working together. Locke becomes involved in politics
In 1672 Locke became involved in politics. Shaftesbury influenced Locke to get involved and he ended up coming up with great political ideas. He first became involved when Shaftesbury became the Lord Chancellor. This event was significant because Locke came up with great political ideas once he got involved. Traveling across France
In 1675 Locke traveled across France. It was during the fall of Shaftesbury when he went. He spent his days as a tutor and a medical attendant. He tutored and attended for Caleb Banks. This event was significant because he learned new things from traveling in this country. The knowledge got transfered to his writings which helped make him a famous philosopher. Locke comes back
In 1679 Locke traveled back to London from France. When he came back Shaftesbury's political career went back in the right direction and he convinced Locke to spread his ideas on natural rights and government. His ideas were viewed as a major revolution for that time period in English history. This event was significant because more people discovered Locke after he spread his ideas. Locke moves to Netherlands
In 1683 Locke moved to the Netherlands. He moved because he was suspected to be involved in the Rye House Plot. In the Netherlands, Locke had a lot of free time on his hands so he wrote a lot. This event was significant because Locke wrote good stories that later got published. ("John Locke-Biography") -
Europeans vs. Turks
In 1683 the Europeans and the Turks went to war. This went on until 1699 so it was a 16 year war. The Turks were the overall winners. This event was significant because it affected all of Europe and Turkey. The Turks gained land in Europe which helped them a lot. ("World History") -
Locke's work gets published
In 1688 much of Locke's work got published. Some that were published are "Essay Concerning Human Understanding", "The Two Treatises of Civil Government" and "A Letter Concerning Toleration". This event was significant because his work being published lead to more and more people reading his work which then lead to him becoming famous. ("John Locke-Biography") -
Locke dies
On October 28, 1704 John Locke passed away, He died in Oates, England and was buried in a churchyard. He was single his whole life. This event was significant because a famous and talented philosopher wasn't around anymore. (Jones 583)
