  • Louise Rosenblatt

    Her theory was that all readers apply their own individual experiences and background knowledge to the text that they read which effects their interpretation.
  • Maria Montessori

    Montessori’s theory is that children need orderly systematic training to master skills. Her theory was geared towards making children more independent in their education.
  • Multicultural and Diverse Texts

    The Civil Rights movement called for there to be a change in the literature being taught in schools. The Woman’s Rights movement also urged a push for more updated literature.
  • Social and Emotional Learning and Literacy

    In 1994, A group of people had a desire to find the missing piece of education. They found that social and emotional support was missing. They began implementing SEL in 1997 by writing, Promoting Social and Emotional Learning: Guidelines for Educators” .
  • Reading First Intiative

    The Reading First Initiative promotes instructional practices that are backed by the No Child Left Behind Act (2001). It funded staff development and technical assistance to schools and districts.
  • The Literacy Education for All, Results for the Nation Act.

    This act made it possible for the secretary of education to be able to award grants to states to plan to improve that literacy of children from birth to 12th grade.
