On 31 October 1517, Luther wrote to his bishop, Albert of Mainz, protesting the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in his letter a copy of his "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," which came to be known as The Ninety-Five Theses. He also nailed the Ninety-Five Theses to the Churches door in Wittenburg.

The Disputation at Heidelberg begins. It is a debate of Luther's ideas at a meeting of the Augustinian chapter. Luther joins the debate in April. Several of the brothers come to accept his way of thinking. The papal court begins an inquisition in Rome in response to Luther's ideas. Luther is tried in his absence on charges of heresy.

Pope Leo X demands that Luther recant within 2 months or be excommunicated. Luther burned the bull after the deadline since they (the Church) burned his books.

After being excommunicated, Lther was summoned to Worms. He was summoned to either renounce or reaffirm his writings. When he appeared before the assembly He was presented with a table filled with copies of his writings. He was asked if he still believed what these works taught. He requested time to think about his answer. He was Granted an extension of one day. The next day he did not recant his writings.

After the Diet of Worm, Luther was allowed back to his home in Wittenburg and was assure 'safe passage' but Prince Frederick the Wise was smarter then that. The prince arranged for Luther to be seized on his way from the Diet by a company of masked horsemen, who carried him to the castle of the Wartburg, where he was kept about a year.In this time Luther Translated the Bible into the common tounge (Germen). But outside the Castle walls, Luthers followers were rebelling against the Church.

Martin Luther tied the nuptial knot with Katharina von Bora, one of the 12 nuns whom he had helped flee from the Nimbschen Cistercian convent, in April 1523. Though a couple of priests and former monks had already married, it was Luther's marriage that sealed the approval on clerical marriage. The couple had six children.
