When he first arrives at Auschwitz he is held is a small and confined area.

Although he was not a tinsman, he became one of the best workers and used his job to visit Anja at Birkenau.

By making shoes Vladek could get food as rewards from certain guards.

After a march of 90 miles Vladek stayed one night in the small camp.

For one week prisoners were packed tightly into cattle cars. Vladek made a hammock to stay above everyone and reached out the window to eat snow.

He is marched on by the Germans on foot towards the boarder rather than by train.

Prisoners are put on a freight train for the next town to be met by American's.

Instead of Americans they are met by Wehrmacht patrol and marched to a lake to be executed. When they wake in the morning the patrolmen have left.

They are put in a barn for the night and once again the Germans had left in the morning.

With Shirek, he finds a newly abandoned house to live in.

They take a train and stop in Wurzburg.

When in Belsen, Vladek meets two ladies who know Anja and who help him contact her but tell him not to return to Sosnowiec.

He takes a train to Poland but loses Shirek and walks the rest of the way for four weeks

Flies to Sweden with Anja for a new llife.
