The Survivor's tale begins

Hitlers appointment as Chancellor of Germany changed the world. His plan was to get rid of politics and make Germany a powerful, unified one party state.

The same year that Vladek and Anja are married they have their first son, Richeu, who later dies during the Holocaust.

While Vladek is bringing Anja to the sanitarium, he sees a Nazi flag for the first time. This is Vladek's first experience with Nazi Germany. Most of the panels around this page have a Nazi symbol as a background. This is foreshadowing the trouble that is yet to come.

While in the army Vladek is taken prisoner until 1940

Germany invades Poland, Beginning WW2 in Europe. Within weeks of the invasion the Polish army was defeated.

All Jews living in Sosnowiec are forced to relocate to the Stara Sosnowiec Quarter. The Image for this event is of a German Police force in Sosnowiec during World War Two.

After this attack, America joins the war.

Vladek and Anja learn that Richeu was killed a few months after they seperated from him.

Anja's parents die in Auschwitz. Most likely they were sent to the gas chambers

They hide in the house of a Polish woman. They pay her with money and valuables.

Birkenau was a bigger camp next to Auschwitz. Anja is eventually moved from Birkenau to Auschwitz, where Vladek is.

They remain in Auschwitz for ten months before they are freed by American Soldiers. Vladek works as a tinman, cobbler, and digging ditches and performing other manual labor.

With the war coming to an end, the Nazi's evacuated Auschwitz. Soon after, the prisoners are liberated by the Americans.

Some of the American troops who liberated Dachau were so appalled by the conditions that they killed at least two groups of captured gaurds. Records indicate that at least 32,000 inmates died at Dachau.

Hitler was told that the Russians were only a day or two from overtaking the Chancellory and commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head.

Germany signed an unconditional surrender at the Allied headquarters in Reims, France.

The war was over and Vladek and Anja had escaped the horrors of the concentration camp. But it is difficult to say what this meant to them. Their lives had been uprooted, their families killed, and the world had changed greatly.

Vladek and Anja had an extreme desire to leave Poland. Vladek tells Art that it was largely because there was nothing left for them there.

The author of Maus One and Two is born. Art begins to draw professionally at age 16. He studied art and philosophy at Harpur college.

Possibley a result of the trauma of being in death camps and surving the Holocaust, Anja commits suicide. It is not completely certain wether her suicide is a direct result of the traumas of surviving the Holocoaust because Anja had experienced a state of depression before most of her experiences with the Nazi's took place. However, her traumatic experiences definitely were a large part of the depression that led to her suicide.

Vladek lives through the hardships of the war and concentration camp to tell his story of survival and the horrors of Nazi Germany. He died of natural causes after having lived what, though not a desirble one, was undoubtedly a full life.
