The colonists settled in the new world but stayed on shore during the first winter while the houses were being built.There were only10 girls on the ship when it started and only 5 of them made it, and one of them was my ancestor. I also had an ancestor who fell off the Mayflower. -

Washington, D.C. Before Washington D.C. was built, our first two capitals were in the northeast. New York City was our capital from 1789 to 1790. This is where George Washington took the oath of office and became our first President. In 1790 Philadelphia became our second capital, the capital became Washington D.C. in 1800.

The Anti-Slavery Society fought to end slavery. Abolitionits helped the slaves fight for their freedom. The abolitionits belived that slavery was wrong. One of the most famous abolitionists was Willam Lloyd Garrison. Groups like the Anti-Slavery Society helped abolish slavery in 1865.

When Elis island opened, a great change was taking place in the United States. Many immigrants from all over Europe wanted to come to America, and places like Ellis Island made this possible. People had to pass many tests before they were allowed to enter the United States, but it was worth it to the millions of people who tried. Ellis Island was opened for a long time but closed in 1954. -
More Information about the 19th Amendment The struggle for women's right to vote was long and hard. In 1920, 72 years after the Seneca Falls Convention, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution finally gave women he right to vote.

In 1976 the 50 millionth vister came to the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building has 103 floors. The Empire State Building represents how New York City grew.

In 1978 Rhode Island returned about 1800 acres of land to the Narragansett reservation. A reservation is an area of land put aside for indians. Some Narragansett live on the reservation. Others live throughout the Northeast. (The exact date is not known to the author.)
