Russell described his theory of descriptions in his paper “On Denoting” which was published in 1905, in which he explained his idea that descriptions must be very specific or they have no meaning at all. Over time Russell modified his position on descriptions, and along with Frege, gave flight to Analytic Philosophy.

Russell was outspoken about his anti-war beliefs during World War I, and this eventually landed him in Brixton prison for five months. While imprisoned at Brixton Russell wrote his book “Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy”. He was imprisoned for a second time in 1961, this time for anti- nuclear protest. In 1963 he started the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, which advocated for political prisoners, social justice and anti-nuclear weapons.

Russell was awarded the Noble Prize "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought." (1) Russell authored more than 70 books in his life time, with subjects ranging from Math to philosophy. He also wrote more than one thousand letters and essays.

Russell wrote and released his manifesto calling for a conference of scientist to assess the impact that weapons of mass destruction will have on humanity. The first convention, call the Pugwash Conference was held in 1957. Eleven scientist, including Russell signed the manifesto, all but one of the signatories were recipients of the Nobel Prize.
