Mozi (墨翟), a Chinese philosopher was the first to come up with the idea of a Camera Obscura that we know of. he noticed that an imaged taken from it would cause the picture to be upside down and left to right because of how light moves. -

The thought of Camera Obscura
Philosophers are still pondering about this idea of recreating an image with light. In 900AD Al Kindi proved the behaviors of light with a pinhole that other philosophers such as Aristotle and Anthemius discovered.Everyone was on the right track but never thought to use a screen on one side of the hole to project it to a surface. -

Alhazen and his pinhole camera.
Alhazen was the first to make a fully functioning pinhole camera, and came up with the name of Camera Obscura. He was the man who wrote The Book of Optics, and the treatise of optics.
At about the same time of Alhazens inventions, Chinese scientists were making the same ideas come true, using this new tool to solve geographical problems from centuries ago. -

Leonardo used the Camera Obscura to represent how the human eye works, with many sets of drawings in codex atlanticus. -

Niépce also created the first reproduction of a photo with many conducted experiments.
He created the first successful heliograph from an engraving of Pope Pius VII.It was destroyed however, in attempt to reprint it later.
Though in 1826 he recreated another photograph of Cardinal Georges d'Amboise using bitumen on pewter or zinc plates that could be used for printing. -

Niépce took the oldest living photograph that we have.
The photo is of an upper part of his estate.
He used bitumen of Judea after experimenting for a while with many other chemicals. -
Big jump in the world of photography
By about this time, Niépce had been using daguerreotypes to their full potential. The long 7+ minute exposure time started declining to seconds.
Louis Daguerre's process is now being used worldwide. (To the public) -

Edmond Becquerel creates the first photographs that are in color, though they can only be produced in lab.
the exposure can take hours upon days to fully reach colorful potential. -

the first durable tricolor photo was created by James Clerk Maxwell. he took it with Green, blue, and red color filters. -

Eadweard Muybridge created a bunch of tripwires and cameras to take multiple photos of a moving horse. This film ca be viewed through a zoetrope. -

From 2000 on we see many, many thousands of cameras being created by multiple companies.
The digital age has taken over photography.
Megapixels, FPS, etc has been getting better and better every year.
in 2000 Canon released a 3.2mp camera, and that was a huge advancement.
In 2017 Canon can release a camera with less than 35mp and get shunned by photo practitioners.
Photographers want more and more quality and often forget the simplicity and advancement that we've made throughout the years.
