Act 1, Scene 1
In a public square, servants of Montague and Capulet fight. Prince Escalus appears and declares that any more fighting in the city will result in a death penalty. Romeo explains his sadness to Benvolio. -
Act 1, Scene 2
Paris asks Lord Capulet for permission to marry Juliet. Lord Capulet says she is too young but invites Paris to a party and tells him to court her. On a street near Capulet's house, through the list of guests, Romeo discovers Rosaline will be at the party. Benvolio tells Romeo to find another woman at the party by comparing to Rosaline. -
Act 1, Scene 4
At a street near the Capulet house, Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio are on the way to the costume ball at the Capulet house. Wearing masks, they will not be recognized as Montagues. Romeo is still depressed about Rosaline rejecting him, and says he had a dream about outcomes of the party. -
Act 1, Scene 5
The party at a hall in the Capulet house. Romeo sees Juliet and falls in love at first sight. Tybalt recognizes Romeo's voice and threatens to kill him. Lord Capulet urges Tybalt to behave himself, even if it is Romeo. Romeo and Juliet finally meet and kiss, and learn of each other's identity after the party. -
Act 2, Scene 1
A lane near the wall of Capulet's orchard. Later after the party, Romeo hopes to see Juliet again and returns to the Capulet house. He climbs the wall, while Benvolio and Mercutio search for him. Mercutio makes fun of Romeo for being lovesick, but they do not know of Romeo being in love with Juliet. -
Act 2, Scene 2
In Capulet's orchard, Romeo watches Juliet on the balcony of her room from below. Both characters speak privately to themselves, but Romeo hears Juliet. They declare their love for each other and make plans for a wedding. -
Act 1, Scene 3
In Capulet's house, the Nurse rambles and babbles about her memories of raising Juliet. Lady Capulet tries to convince Juliet to marry Paris. -

Act 2, Scene 3
The next morning, in Friar Laurence's cell in the monastery. Romeo arrives from Capulet's orchard, and asks Friar Laurence to marry him and Juliet. The friar criticizes Romeo for forgetting about Rosaline easily and being lovesick for Juliet. However, he agrees to marry them in hopes to end the feud between their families. -
Act 2, Scene 4
Romeo meets with Benvolio and Mercutio in the street. The Nurse comes to bring a message from Romeo to Juliet, in which they will meet at Friar Laurence's cell for their marriage. -
Act 2, Scene 5
Juliet is in the orchard, nervous while waiting for the Nurse to deliver Romeo's message. The Nurse arrives and teases Juliet by taking a long time to get to the point, and then tells Juliet of the arrangements for the wedding. -
Act 2, Scene 6
Romeo and Juliet meet in Friar Laurence's cell. The two confess each other's love and are married by Friar Laurence. -
Act 3, Scene 1 (Normal)
After being married, Romeo meets with Benvolio and Mercutio. They come across Tybyalt on the street, who insults Romeo. While Romeo stays calm, Mercutio fights Tybalt in anger. Romeo tries to stop them, but Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo kills Tybalt for revenge, and leaves. Benvolio explains what happened to Prince Escalus, punishes Romeo with banishment from Verona. -
Act 3, Scene 1 (Alternate)
After being married, Romeo meets with Benvolio and Mercutio. They come across Tybyalt on the street, who insults Romeo. Romeo and Benvolio stop Mercutio from being angered, and calm him down. Because of this, Mercutio is not killed by Tybalt, and Romeo does not kill Tybalt for revenge, so Romeo is not exiled. -
Act 3, Scene 2 (Normal)
Juliet wait for night in her room so Romeo can climb to her bedroom with the rope ladder. The Nurse delivers news of Tybalt's death and Romeo's banishment. -
Act 3, Scene 3 (Normal)
Friar Laurence tells Romeo about being banished. When Juliet hears from the Nurse that Juliet is sorrowful too, Romeo threatens to stab himself. Friar Laurence suggests a plan for Romeo to spend the night with Juliet then escape to Mantua. Meanwhile, the friar will announce the wedding and ask for a pardon from the Prince. -
Act 3, Scene 4 (Normal)
Paris visits the Capulets, mourning Tybalt's death. He decides it is not a time to discuss marriage, but Lord Capulet decides that Juliet will marry Paris on Thursday as a solution to all of the sorrow. -
Act 3, Scene 2 (Alternate)
Juliet waits in her room for nightfall so Romeo to climb the rope ladder. However, this scene does not have the Nurse informing Juliet about Tybalt and Romeo, because Mercutio and Tybalt do not fight in the previous scene. -
Act 3, Scene 3 (Alternate)
In this timeline, Romeo does not flee and hide, because he did not kill Tybalt. So this scene never happened in this setting. Or, Romeo is shown heading to the Capulets' house. -
Act 3, Scene 4 (Alternate)
Paris visits the Capulets to talk about marriage. Lord Capulet still believes that his daughter is too young to marry, and nobody in the family is mourning, so marriage is not quickly rushed and arranged. -

Timeline split
The timeline splits off from the normal story. Normally, Tybalt and Mercutio die. In a different timeline, Tybalt and Mercutio do not fight, resulting in neither of the characters dying. -
Act 3, Scene 5 (Normal)
After spending the night together, Romeo leaves to go to Mantua. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that her father has decided she will marry Paris on Thursday. This upsets Juliet and refuses to marry Paris. Lord Capulet is enraged at Juliet and threatens to disown her if she does not marry Paris. The Nurse tells Juliet to marry Paris because Romeo is banished and Paris is better. Juliet heads to Friar Laurence for help. -
Act 4, Scene 1 (Normal)
Paris makes arrangements for the wedding in Friar Laurence's cell. When Paris leaves, Juliet tells Friar Laurence that she will kill herself if the problem cannot be solved. Friar Laurence creates a plan for Juliet to drink a mixture of herbs to fake her own death. When she wakes up after two days, Romeo will be waiting for her and they will go to Mantua together. -
Act 4, Scene 2 (Normal)
At the Capulet house, Lord Capulet is making plans for the wedding. Juliet comes to apologize and say that she will marry Paris. Lord Capulet is relieved and changes the wedding date to Wednesday, the next day. -
Act 4, Scene 3 (Normal)
Juliet prepares to use the potion Friar Laurence gave her, but she confused and fears what will happen if she drinks it. Eventually she drinks from the vial. -
Act 3, Scene 5 (Alternate)
The beginning of this scene plays out similar to the original story, where Romeo wakes up and climbs down the rope ladder to leave. However, Juliet's parents do not tell her about any arranged marriage. -
Act 4, Scene 1 (Alternate)
Due to Juliet not visiting Friar Laurence for help, this scene still takes place at the same time but has Romeo and his friends instead. -
Act 4, Scene 2 (Alternate)
Because Lord Capulet is not making wedding preparations, this scene focuses on Romeo again. Before he heads towards the Capulets' house, Romeo tries to make an excuse for why he is leaving while talking to Mercutio and Benvolio. -
Act 4, Scene 3 (Alternate)
In this scene, Juliet is not preparing to drink the potion from Friar Laurence. Instead, Romeo climbs up the ladder again to spend the night with Juliet as he did the previous night. -
Act 4, Scene 4 (Normal)
The next morning in Capulet's house, everyone is excited for the wedding and preparing. -
Act 4, Scene 5 (Normal)
The Nurse heads to Juliet's bedroom to wake her up, only to find her dead. Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Paris, and the Nurse are full of grief. Friar Laurence instructs them to bring Juliet's body to the family tomb. -
Act 4, Scene 5 (Alternate)
Due to the wedding not being planned, this scene plays out similar to the previous morning. Romeo wakes up and says goodbye to Juliet again while climbing down the ladder. -
Act 4, Scene 4 (Alternate)
Unlike the original story, there are no wedding preparations being made. So, this scene takes place at the same time but is shown with Romeo and Juliet together in her room, expressing their love similar to Sunday and Monday night. -
Act 5, Scene 2 (Normal)
Friar John comes to Friar Laurence's cell to tell him that the letter could not be delivered to Romeo. Friar Laurence heads to the Capulet vault in hide her in his room so Romeo can come to take her. -
Act 5, Scene 2 (Alternate)
The Nurse informs Juliet of Friar Laurence and Romeo's plan to announce the marriage and end the feud. -
Act 5, Scene 1 (Alternate)
Because Romeo is not banished from Verona, this scene does not take place in Mantua. Instead, this scene begins with Romeo and Friar Laurence in his cell. Friar Laurence wished to end the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, so the two make plans to announce the marriage between Romeo and Juliet the next morning. The Nurse arrives for Romeo to send a message to Juliet about the plans. -
Act 5, Scene 1 (Normal)
On a street in Mantua, Balthasar, Romeo's servant, comes fro Verona to inform Romeo that Juliet is dead and in the Capulet's tomb. Because Romeo did not receive a message from Friar Laurence, he believes that Juliet is dead. Romeo decides he will return to Verona and die next to Juliet. He searches for an apothecary selling poison. -
Act 5, Scene 3 (Normal)
Paris goes to the cemetery with the Capulets' tomb at night to place flowers on Juliet's grave. Romeo comes at the same time and opens the tomb. Paris thinks he will harm the bodies, and challenges him. Romeo kills Paris, places his body in the tomb by request, declares his love for Juliet, and drinks the poison, and dies. -
Act 5, Scene 3 (Alternate)
The scene begins in the morning rather than night. Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence have gathered members from both families to announce their marriage. Lord Capulet and Lord Montague agree to end their feud. This scene ends relatively similar with the end to the feud and Friar Laurence explaining everything. -
Act 5, Scene 3 (Normal, continued)
Friar Laurence arrives and Juliet wakes up. He insists for Juliet to leave She refuses and kills herself with Romeo's dagger. After being arrested, Friar Laurence and the servants explain what happened to the Prince and the Watchmen. Lord Capulet and Lord Montague agree to end the feud and build statues to honor Romeo and Juliet.
