Racism had been going on for a long time in South Africa, but this was the official date apartheid began. 317 laws for apartheid were created by the nationalist party.

Black people started breaking the laws set in 1948. They did things such as drinking out of water fountains and sitting on benches marked only for white people.

This law made black and white children go to different schools.

The government made a new law that said black and white people would have different homelands, or Bantustans. They did this to keep black people from becoming official citizens of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela was put in jail for five years. He was charged with incitement to strike and illegally leaving the country.

Rhodesia's prime minister announces their independence from Great Britian and that white people will rule them. Great Britian was willing to give them indepence if blakc people could have some power, also.

Highschool kids start protesting for better education for black people. Police use tear gas and bullets, killing over 600 peope.

A man against apartheid, Steve Bilko, is arrested. He was one who organized the Soweto Massacre.

Steve Bilko was arrested about a month ago, and dies in police custody. He dies of brain damage, most likely caused by being beaten by the police.

The President, F.W. de Klerk, lifted the ban on the African National Congress.

Nelson Mandela is let out from prison and thanks F.W. de Klerk for setting him free, but says there is more work to be done to end apartheid.

South Africa has the first election where both blakc and white people can vote. Nelson Mandela becomes the first black president.
