Girls wore poodle skirts, sweater sets, bobby sox, and saddle shoes. Boys wore baggy pants, v-necked sweaters, loafers, or white "bucks". Many teens wore white t-shirts, motor cycle jackets, black leotards, bermuda shorts, pedal pushers, ballerina flats, full skirts with petticoats, and strapless evening gowns. -

Silly putty was introduced in the 1950's in the toy fair in New York City. In 1957 the first televised comerical for silly putty was aired. The comerical sold 4,500 tons of silly putty. -

This style often used synthetic materials and technology developed during World War 2. Furniture used clean, simple designs, and had straight lines, simple curves, and few ornaments. Technology also influenced furniture like a TV table was made so people could eat and watch TV at the same time. -
World Events: The Cold War
This war was fought between the United States and the Soviet Union and it did not have hand to hand fights like most wars did; it was fought with spies, secret actions, and trying to win over other countries leaders. People during this war learned to be on theier toes and be ready for nuclear bombs. None were every launched exept for pratice bombs. -

People thought that their spectacular cars showed how succuessful they were. Cars had lots of gleaming chrome, fancy grilles, bright, shiny paint, and soaring fins. Some cars could only travel a few miles on 1 gallon of gas and had to fill up often. -

Seperate but Equal was a law that said whites and blacks could be seperated if what they have is equal.The white people always ended up haveing more and better things than the blacks. Most people considered this law Seperaate but Unequal. -

After the war most womens number one priority was to find a man who could provide for her and give her a family. The role for most women in the 50s was the home keeper. Women would stay home all the time and clean and take care of their children. In this time period most families could afford a middle- class life style. -

After World War Two there was a baby boom and the new and big families needed homes. Homes in the cities began to cost to much and they began to run out of room. So suburbs were created. Suburbs were town just outside of big cities. They had lower priced homes and most homes looked the same. -

This "Forgotten War" was part of the Cold War and was fought mainly between the United states and the South Koreans. This war was worked out with a truce instead of nuclear weapons. The treatyn was signed in 1953, when the war ended. -

Pioneers in a style of guitar music what combined jazz and he blues. Honk Ballard song "The Twist" was a very famous song to dance to, teenagers and adults doing it. The Cha-Cha is a famous Cuba dance. -

One of the most succesful singers and ballads in the American music world. At San Francisco's Black Hawk Club, Mathis attracted the co-worker. She was determind to make him a star and become his manager. Also became involved in films, singing the title song for the 1957 films "Lizzie." Johnny was being dissatified with his manager so he astablished his own company, Rojon Productions. Not only to become his one manager but promote new talent. -

Brazil was the only condiate to host the world cup in hte 1950's, although it was origanally planned to be held in 1949. One of the biggest shocks in World Cup histotory came on june 29th when England were beaten by USA. Sweeden and Spain also showed class and topped their groups. A world record of 200,000 spectators watched the game and could't believe the outcome. -

Charles M. Schulz made the very first one, and the very first strip was four panels that showed Charlie Brown walking with two other young children. The cartoon strip was orginally called Li'l Folks. Schulz inspired an entirely new genre in publishing without enen realizing it. -

Eisenhower was in office for two terms even while between the two he had heart problems. He was big on trying to stop communism.
