    Serbia allied with Russia and emerged as the victor.

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia with German encouragement. Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary to protect Serbia.

    Germany declares war on Russia and France.
  • 1915

    Italy and Bulgaria join the war.
  • 1916

    Romania joins the war.
    The Germans launched a new offensive but were stopped by the French in The Battle of Verdun.
    The French and British then attacked the German lines at The Battle of the Somme.
  • November 1917

    Elections were held for the Constituent Assembly, convened by the provisional government.
  • April 1917

    United States declared war on Germany as a consequence of sinking non-commercial ships.
  • 23 February 1917

    Large demonstration in Petrograd that was followed by a general strike and riots.
  • October 1917

    The Bolsheviks created their own armed militia and prepared for an insurrection. Rebels occupied Petrograd, took over the palace and overthrew the provisional government.
  • June 1918

    The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed.
  • 11 November 1918

    An armistice was signed bringing the war to an end.
  • Organisation of peace

    A conference was held in Paris to establish the terms for peace. (Treaty of Versailles)
  • 1921

    The Red Army wins the civil war in Russia against the White Army that had the support of America, France, Japan and Great Britain.
