Johannes Gutenburg invented the printing press in 1456. This led to printing bibles and other books. -

The first regulatory published newspaper was England's Oxford Gazette (1665). The first American Newspaper was "Publick Occurences" both Foreghn and Domestick in 1690. -
The Boom of Journalism
The first newspaper is most like what we know today is the 'New York Herald.' This was the first paper to have regular beats, regular business, and WallStreet coverage. -
Associated Press
Formed in 1846. 5 news papers bonded together to purchase a pony express route to bring news from the Mexican War. Now more than 15k news outlets publish/broadcast works from the AP. Most newspapers use AP standard guidelines for their stories. -
The Civil War
Fierce competition led to journalists relying heavily on telegrams to send news to other parts of the country. This began the more concise style of writing that we see in newspapers today. -
The Penny Press
Newspapers grew immensely during the Industrial Revolution. Advances in printing technology made printing cheaper.
The 'New York Sun' was founded in 1833 by Benjamin Day. He started by printing 5,000 copies a day and sold them on streets for one cent. -

Henreich Hertz of Germany sent and detected the first radio waves. -
Yellow Journalism
In the mid 1890's, news was full of dramatic exaggerated news. Publishers/owners of newspapers used the publications for their own means.
William Randolph Hearst and Joesph Pulizer both owned competing newspapers in NYC, and they both utilized yellow journalism. -
Guglielmo Marconi
Guglielmo Marconi who is usually credited with inventing the radio, built a wireless device that could transmit moorse code. People also believe it was Telsa. -
The Muckrakers
Yellow journalism created an even larger demand for news. The birth of real investigative reporting happened in the early 1900's. This worked to reveal injustices, inequality,abuses, and corruption during the Progressive Era. -
The First Broadcast
Reginald Fessender makes the first of music to ships in New York harbor on Christmas. -
The First Radio Station
In 1916, we saw the first radio station when Frank Conard started broadcasting in Pittsburgh. Conard did not intend to gather an audience but if he missed a show, people would call him and ask if he was doing alright. He stopped for a time during World War I and then resumed in 1919. -
1st Radio Station
The first radio station, KDKA in Pittsburgh was started by Westing House. It was only 100 watts. It still exists at 50,000 watts and can be heard over most of the eastern U.S. at night because the sun interferes with them. -
The Radio Act
The Radio Act establishes federal radio. In other countries, government was involved in media. In the U.S.government largely stays out of it. -
T.V.'s Big Impact 1940's-1950's
FM developed and had better quality than AM radio but, it grew slowly because people had moved on from radio. Radio lost a lot of their best performances to T.V.. T.V. stole radio shows formats like mysteries,dramas, westerns, game shows and, comedies. -
Rise of FM 1960's-1990's
Another development was stations specialized country, regions, religions, political sports and more. -
Watergate
Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward began investigating a robbery at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Woodward and Bernstein eventually trace the robbery back to Nixion adminstration. Nixion had tried to cover his tracks, but eventually, he was forced to resign after being threaten with impeachment. -
Digital Area 1990's-Now
Brought new options like Internet, Satellite, HD. Digital music cuts into radio time while Podcasts are the new talk radio.
