At the end of July, Chris accepts a ride from a guy who calls himself Crazy Ernie. The man offers Chris a jov on a ranch in northern Cali. Crazy Ernie had not intended on paying Chris so Chris stole a red in bike from the yard then drove it ten yards and ditched the bike in a mall parking lot.

Chris gets ticketed for hitchhiking near Willow Creek and the unpaid ticket was sent to Chris's parents, Walt and Billie.

Chris sneaked into Mexico by paddling through the dam's open floodgates and shooting the spilway below, afraid they wouldn't let him in because he didn't have any identification.

Chris sees that the canal does not lead to the ocean but he tries and works his way through swamp to the sea. He then has to drag his canoe through mud and at sundown he finds some dry ground to camp.

Chris tries to find an opening to the sea but kept going in circles then he found Mexican duck hunting guides who spoke English and they tell him there's no outlet to the sea.

Chris set up a camp on the edge of a desolate plateau and stayed there for ten days until winds forced him to move.

Chris beached the canoe on a sandbar and observed powerful waves. Then an hour later the winds got really strong coming from the desert.

Chris leaves his canoe on a hummock of dune grass southeast of El Golfo de Santa Clara and started walking north.

Chris crossed the Teklanika River which was knee deep and arrived at an abandoned bus sitting on the trail.

Chris shoots and kills a moose but three days later the moose meat was full of maggots. He regretted killing the moose because he just let it go to waste.

Chris writes a S.O.S. note saying "ATTENTION POSSIBLE VISITORS S.O.S. I NEED YOUR HELP. I AM INJURED, NEAR DEATH, AND TOO WEAK TO HIKE OUT OF HERE.I AM ALL ALONE, THIS IS NO JOKE. Chris died from eating wild potato seeds that was poisoned with swainsonine and straved to death. He also left a note on his final day; "I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all!"
