The Spanish American War was a conflict between the US and Cuba. Cuba wanted to gain independence from Spain. After the mysterious sinking of the US Marine boat the Maine, US called war on Cuba. US victory in the war created a peace treaty that had the the Spanish give away control of Cuba, and give control of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. -

These Open Door Notes aimed to secure international agreement to the U.S. policy for international trade and commerce in China. In 1900, the Boxer Rebellion threatened the idea of the Open Door Policy. Together, the Open Door Notes outlined U.S. policy toward China and expressing U.S. hopes for cooperation with the other foreign powers with a stake in the region. Though, since the ideas were non-binding, the Notes did not prevent the United States from claiming terrioty in China. -

Panama Canal Control
The Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1901 permitied the United States to build and manage its own canal. After voting on the location, John Hay signed a treaty with the Colombian Foreign Minister Tomás Herrán saying the US could build the canal. But Colombian Congress rejected the offer. Roosevelt then sent warships to Panama City in support of Panamanian independence. Eventually, Colombia provided money for the canal, and the US guanrenteed Panamanian independence. -

Russo Japanese War and the Treaty of Portsmouth
The Russo Japanese War was a war between the Russians and the Japanese on who gets control over Manchuria. The two nations could not come to an agreement by war so te Japanese asked U.S. President Roosevelt to negotiate a peace agreement. Roosevelt wanted both nations to have contol over parts of Northeast China, Though, Roosevelt worried about the consequences if Japan completly took over The Treaty gave Japan control of Korea and much of South Manchuria and Russia's control decreased. -
