The development of tobacco as a cash crop created a huge demand for labor and 1619 two dozen African slaves were brought to Virginia. The slave population continued to increase rapidly as it boosted the American colonial economy. It’s hard to understand what specifly was conceiderd a slave at the time since there were not laws regarding slavery until the 1660’s. The shift to these laws was caused by the problems of rebellion among the white indentured servants. -
