The school board selected 9 outstanding african american students, known as the Little Rock Nine, to attend Central High School in 1957.

Ernest Green became the first African American to graduate from Central High School.

Gov. Faubus continued to fight intergration. He even closed the Little Rock public schools during the 1958-59 school year.

The schools finally reopened under court order in 1959 and began a process of slow intergration
