Germany Declares war on france which is part of the Schlieffen Plan.The Schlieffen Plan involves germany defeating france in the weeks thatrussia takes to mobilise her troops. Obviously this dosen't work and as Russia mobilises her troops in just 10 days.

The Battle of Mons took place on the french boarder and was the first major battle of World War One. A french of about 80,000 british faced up a agianst a German force twice as large as them and were ultimately pushed back by the larger German force. The BEF retreated to paris where they countered with the battle of Marne.

The First Battle of Marne Ended Germany's month long Attack of France and was a major victory for the Allies. The french were very agressive and by the 9th they were nearly surrounded but managed to retreat about 60 kms where they set up trenches that would last the next few years.
