  • Congress issued the Declaration of Independence

    Two days prior to the ratification of the declaration of independence, congress voted on the matter. That following night, around 200 copies were written and printed and distributed across the US with one being sent across the sea to Great Britain.
  • Stars And Stripes

    The Continental Congress approved and adopted the Stars and Stripes design, likely created by Francis Hopkinson, as the official US flag. It originally featured 13 stars and 13 stripes with a variation of Great Britain's Union Jack in the upper left hand corner.
  • The French Alliance

    A treaty was signed, making official the French-United States alliance and requiring both countries refrain from making peace with Great Britain. It was negotiated by Silas Deane, Benjamin Franklin, and Arthur Lee.
  • End of revolutionary war

    Through the Treaty of Paris, the colonies were able to win their political independence from Britain and form their own nation.
  • Ratification of The US Constitution

    Delaware was the first state to ratify the constitution in 1787, and Rhode island was the last in 1790. The constitution has been operating since 1789 to serve and protect US citizens.
  • Abolition of The Atlantic Slave Trade

    A law was passed prohibiting the import of African slaves into the U.S. Even though slave trade still existed illegally, the official trade was abolished.
  • Denmark Vesey's Rebellion

    A Methodist leader and formerly enslaved person, Vesey, planned to murder white enslavers, free slaves, and flee to Haiti. The rebellion failed and 35 other slaves were tried and executed.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Turner, a Virginian slave, rallied other slaves and started a revolt. At two am, they began a killing spree which resulted in at least 55 deaths, until white authorities stopped the culprits.
  • Mexican American War

    The war lasted two years and was caused by a disputed boundary between the US and Texas border. Mexico was yet to recognize Texas as US territory and felt inclined to defend their land until the US won the war.
  • Abraham Lincoln Was Elected President.

    Lincoln had around 40% of the popular vote, and 180 electoral votes. His election is notable because of the voter enthusiasm in a country that was so close to a civil war.
