    Anti-government domestic terrorists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols detonated a truck bomb at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The explosion killed 168 people, including nineteen children, and injured more than 680 others. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 buildings within a 16-block radius. It is to date the deadliest domestics terrorist attack in US history.

    The US House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton for lying under oath about an affair with WH intern Monica Lewinsky. While the House of Representatives had impeached President Clinton, the Senate acquitted him on the basis that his actions did not constitute the “high crimes and misdemeanors” specified in the US Constitution as a condition for impeachment. Clinton is one of three presidents that been impeached joining Andrew Johnson (1868) and Donald Trump (2019/2021)

Due to these attacks, America responded with a multi-decade global war on terror to eliminate hostile groups deemed terrorist organizations, as well as the foreign governments purported to support them The validity of these attacks has been a polarizing topic since their inception (Zelizer 249-252)

    Office of Homeland Security established/US Patriot Act
    Due to the September 11th attacks, the Office of Homeland Security was established by President Bush which sought to counter terrorism. Their most important act was the Patriot Act. The act provided law-enforcement agencies more power in investigating suspected terrorists. Loosened constraints on wiretaps and internet monitoring allowed for the detainment and deportation of citizens believed to pose risks to national security. Their measures raised a concern of privacy however. Zeiler 254-257)
