Sergey Makhalov was born in the village of Karpunikha (Nizhegorodskaya region). After the 7th grade he studied at pedagogical college in Vetluga but he spent some years in Bor, He was the secretary of the Komsomol organization, the Chairman of the primary organization "Osoaviakhim". Moreover, he was a great sportsman in fencing. He was awarded with "The Voroshilovskiy shooter" badge and others. Sergey was an open-hearted, generous person, protected others and didn't let anyone hurt him. -
Order to stop the enemy
Sergey started his military career when he joined The Red Army from the 3rd course. In 1944 he joined the ranks of the Active army and participated in the crossing of the Narev River, liberated Belarus and fought against the Nazis in East Prussia. In 1944, Makhalov received the medal "For Bravery", and in September of the same year he got the Order of the Red Star. He took the victory from the confrontation against 13 tanks. He was awarded the title "The Hero of the Soviet Union". -

By March 1945, he crossed the Dnieper River and became a sergeant, gunner of the 518th Rifle Regiment. Sergey Makhalov participated in the Battle of Konigsberg on March 24, 1945. On June 29, 1945, Makhalov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Throughout his participation in the war, Sergei destroyed 13 tanks, 1 self-propelled weapon, 3 dugouts, 5 observation posts, 8 machine guns, 1 mortar battery and up to 300 enemy soldiers and officers. In November 1945, he retired to the reserve. -
Partorg of the Glass plant in Bor
After the war, he returned to his native town Uren and finished his education at the central school. After graduating it in 1951, he was sent to Bor. There he worked as the secretary of the City Komsomol Committeel. Later, he became the head of the propaganda and agitation department of the CPSU City Committee. People unanimously elected him as the secretary of the Communist party selection. He believed that multiplying the glory of heroes meant sacredly fulfilling his duty to the motherland. -
"The tamer of the German tanks"
Later, Makhalov received the Order of the Revolution and 2 Orders of the Red Banner of Labor. During his duty, he received the nickname "The tamer of the German tanks". His granddaughter dedicated him a versefor his exploits.He was buried in the cemetery in the Maloe Pikino district in Bor, Nizhegorodskaya region.
The nearest street to our school in Bor was named after him. The memorial plaque was installed on the house where he lived.
