the Anti-Coolie Act was passed by the California legislature in an attempt to appease anger among white laborers about the pay competition that was newly created by the excess of Chinease immigrants at the height of the California gold rush. The act tried to protect white laborers by imposing a monthly tax on the Chinease immigrants that were seeking to do business in California. -

The Chinese Exclusion Act was a United States federal law signed by Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882. Those revisions allowed the U.S. to suspend Chinese immigration, a ban that was intended to last 10 years. -

Ellis Island
In the 35 years that Ellis Island was open, approximately 8 million immigrants had arrived and been processed in the New York Harbor. It was a major gateway from people in Europe to come into the United States, and people did not pass up the opportunity. Althought it was very successful in getting people into America, it closed in 1954 and became a landfil. -

Opening of the Hull House David Thomas
The Hull House, a settlement house built to help poor urban residents, most of which were struggling immigrants was opened. The Hull House to this day is the most famous settlement house because of its great size and impact on people. -

Jacob Riis published this book to inform the common and upper classes about how the poor live. The book shocked many Americans because they had no idea about any of it. The book talked about tenement houses and the cramped and unhealthy living conditions of these people. -

On June 14, 1897, the Ellis Island Immigration Station burned down due to a kitchen fire. Everything was burned except for the surgeon's quarters, the engine house, and the electric light and steam plant. This was the day the act was approved. It was put into effect on Janurary 1, 1902. This act was passed with the help of Lawrence Veiller (shown in picture) and the COS's exihibit. The exihbit had photographs and maps graphically showing the conditions of New York tenements. -
