The Missouri compromise of 1820 impacted sectionalism because as new territories were added it raised much tension on the decision on whether they would be slave or free states. The compromise had only temporarily solved the problem and eventually ended up adding more tension. For secession the division over slavery was a large part of the south fearing power loss. -
Missouri Compromise Pt1 (1820)
The Missouri compromise of 1820 was a gesture to make sure there were not as many slave states as free states. When Missouri was made a state they decided that it should be a slave state but having as many slave states as free states is a big issue. To resolve this Maine was made into a state and made into a free state to balance the states.This established the 36°30′ parallel where slavery would be banned in new territories that are north of the line with the exception of Missouri. -
The Mexican - American War 1846 Pt 2
The war largely added sectionalism when deciding whether slavery would be added to the new territories we gained. The north had mainly opposed slavery while the south was all for it. Adding a rise of tensions leading to secession and outbreak of more war, with the fear of the south losing power the leaders had envisioned that free states and slave states the balance was slowly slipping in the north's opinions. -
Mexican- American War (1846-1848) Pt1
The Mexican - American war was a war that took place between the citizens of America and Mexico. It was largely over land, after the US annexed Texas which Mexico declared as their land. The war was fueled by the concept of Manifest Destiny and ended with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo where Mexico gave a large portion of their land to the US for $15 million and assumption of war debts. -

The compromise of 1850 was essentially multiple laws that had a goal of easing the country's tensions over slavery. It added California as a free state, allowed New Mexico and Utah to have popular sovereignty, approved the fugitive slave act, in washing D.C abolished slavery, and decided the border of Texas- New Mexico. -

The compromise was actually a temporary solution but soon the north was angered over the fugitive slave act and was a harsh push for the abolishment movement. and the south had a loss as California was entered as a free state. They saw losing their way of slavery and thought the North's growing resistance was a threat, this fear led to secessionist sentiment. -

The fugitive slave act was a direct result from the Compromise of 1850. The act had made it so if slaves escaped even to a free state that their owners could go get them. It was made a federal crime to help slaves make their escape. -

The act increased sectionalism by making the north upset. where many citizens resisted enforcing it and strengthened the abolitionist efforts.They felt it was a violation of freedom, many states passed laws to try to protect escaped slaves and their freedom.It had also scared the south even more into thinking they would lose slavery leading to growing wants of secession, leading to war. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) Pt1
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book which was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in the year 1852. It was a book that showed all the harsh treatments and the sides of the slaves and was all about anti- slavery. The book mainly follows the life of a black man who was enslaved on a southern plantation named Tom. The book showed all of Tom's struggles being a slave. This was huge in the north and was very emotionally impacting. -
Uncle Toms Cabin (1852) Pt2
This had deepened sectionalism by the north was actively growing in anti slavery and the underground railroad. While the south viewed this as a poor representation and unfair for this to be published. The south thought this as a gab to how they live their lives increasing the want for secession. Also increased the north's southern defensiveness and the abolitionist movement. -
Kansas- Nebraska Act (1854) Pt1
The Kansas - Nebraska act had essentially repealed the Missouri Compromise. The act had allowed any settlers in the two territories to be able to decide themselves on slavery violations through popular sovereignty. -

The act had increased sectionalism by leading to much violence and conflict in bleeding Kansas, and also added more tension on north- south divisions. The act also opened the republican party, increasing the fear of losing power in southern territories. Being a direct lead to secession and paving the way to war. -

The Panic of 1857 had made sectionalism worse by making the south feel over confident and superior in their economy to the north. while making the line with the north much worse causing secession and the war. With the south believing they could easily live independently. -
Panic of 1857 Pt1
The panic of 1857 was a financial crisis that had caused a lot of financial insecurity and unemployment largely in the North from the failures of the banks and agricultural decline. The south had less of an impact due to the agricultural economy. The panic was a direct result of over consumption of land and railroads and the lowering of European needs for American agricultural products.
