Hooke's Research
Robert Hooke made his discovery in 1665. He began study a cork and found a honeycomb-like structure. In reality, Hooke was actually studying a dead tissue's cell wall. This lead him to contribute the name "cell" and serve as the first to observe the first cell. Hooke's theory disproved the concept of Spontaneous Generation that states life originated from nonliving matter. -

Leeuwenhoek's Research
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek made his discoveries in 1670 & 1683. Leeuwenhoek's interest in lenses of microscope played an essential part in his contribution to the cell theory. In 1670, he studied pond water using lenses he created. In 1683, he observed the first single celled organism, which was a protozoa. Leeuwenhoek created lenses for the microscope and discovered single celled organisms as part of his contribution. His contribution added the variation of different types of cells. -

Brown's Research
Robert Brown made his discovery in 1833. Brown began to study plant cells. Through his research, he discovered plant cells have structures called a nucleus. The recognition the presence of the nucleus in plant cells would be considered Brown's contribution. -

Schleiden 's Research
Matthias Schleiden made his discovery in 1838. While working with Theodor Schwann, Schleiden started to study plants, thus leading him to believe all plant consisted of cells. His overall contribution to the cell theory was giving a general idea of a cell and tied Hooke's & Brown's research together. -

Schwann's Research
Theodor Schwann made his discovery in 1839. Upon working with Schleiden, he also studied animal tissue. Schwann found that the tissue contained cells similar to the cells within a plant. He agreed that plant's were made up of cells but concluded animals also consist of cells that are slightly different. This would classify as Schwann's contribution that supported and added to Schleiden's theory. -

Virchow's Research
Rudolf Virchow made discovery in 1855. Virchow began to study cells and concluded the words "omnis cellula e cellula". These words translate to "develop only from existing cells." Virchow's contribution to the cell theory was the concept that diseased cells originate from healthy cells. This contribution ties all of the previous theories together and also explains how cell increase in numbers. -
