Ancient Greeks had the first democracy. In Athens citizens were supposed to take a role in their city. Definition of Citizen was a male born in Athens. This didn't include women and slaves. -

Ancient Rome 509 BCE
509 BCE Rome declared a republic when king was sent away. Rich families took over. Upper class people were called Patricians. There were not many(outnumbered) but they still ruled over the plebs(common people). Plebs rebelled and got more rights. Not as active as the athenians, but helped create new democratic institution called the sentate. Patritions could become senators. -

Throughout middle ages, most european countries had monarchy.kings or Queens ruled in places such as France,
England and Russia. In 1215, this all came to an end when a group of British nobility forced the king to give up his “divine right” and to create a Parliament. Parliament comes from the word Parler. -

Manga Carta/ Parlimentary Democracy
1215 King John was forced to sign the Manga Carta. This had certain provisions in it to safeguard the rights of citizens. king could not steal firewood from other lands, force widows to marry,Force knights to pay money to excuse them from
guarding the castle, and many more. Manga carta is so important because it marks the beginning of our parlimentary democracy. -
Absolute Monarchy (louis XIV) -1600-1700
Absolute monarch exercises total power over the land and people.Louis XIV centralized all justice, taxation and military powers under his own authority, took personal control of whatever he bothered with,further weakened the aristocracy by forcing them to attend his court. -

American Revolution 1775-1781
It was not until the revolutions of the late 18th century that our modern democracies took shape. This revolution created the first true democracy.Americans could vote and the powers of the government were restricted so that no one branch could have too much power. Two branches could override one branch if one branch abused their power.it must be noted that the US did not give women the vote until 1919. in 1787, the US made provisions for slaves. African Americans were deemed 3/5'ths of a white. -
The French Revolution 1789
the French Revolution of 1789 was rooted in the spirit of
Democracy. those who championed liberty soon imitated the actions of absolute dictators in order to get their way. used the guillotine to eliminate opposition. left power in a military dictator, Napoleon who tried to use his new power to conquer Europe. -
